Not sure what you mean. The basic setting is in the Admin Control Panel.
Look for 'Membership / Registration' settings.
Then choose CAPTCHA verification?

The CAPTCHA does not exist in your version; you'll need to upgrade. I believe it was added in ~7.3; you're running 7.0.1 which is very very old.

Gizmo, Can I use a Captcha just for the registration screen? I'm afraid to upgrade...I'm not very tech savvy and not sure what kind of chaos upgrading will create for me!

Well, According to Gizmo captcha was not implemented until around v7.3. And he usually is correct. The only two options you have is upgrade or hack the scripts and add it in as a modification.
I would suggest upgrading.
BTW, Upgrading within the 7.x series is quite painless.

What roadblocks or problems could I encounter if I upgrade?
Does anyone here know how to hack the script to add a captcha?

Read my post above yours. Upgrading would be the easy out. Just follow the directions. Of course as always make a backup before. Just in case.

What is the most current version? Does someone want to make a few bucks and I can give them the login/password to my forum and they can implement the upgrade?

The most current version is v7.5.6. You can get Mindraven to do it or several users here at a small fee. The question is do you have member access to the current version for your license.
It really is not that difficult to do yourself.

I probably don't have access; I'll have to buy the current version, which I'm willing to do. Will Mindraven read this thread, do you think?

Sure they will. Rick(Mindraven) is always here peeking. Or if your preference is Mindraven just submit a inquiry.

Several of us offer upgrade services, including MindRaven, myself, etc.

What's the going rate for someone to upgrade me? What's the price of the upgrade license, I'm pretty sure mine doesn't include it, but maybe? How do I find out?

Well, regardless you'll need to renew your license, which is $59. MindRaven charges $99 for an upgrade; I'm not sure what the turnaround time is.
I do upgrades for $120, and the turnaround time is usually around an hour (depending on the time of day).

Gizmo,
What is included in your $120 upgrade price? Does that mean when I get the forum back, everything is in good order and running smoothly?

Standard upgrade; if you have mods to your source (like most of my clients do) I try to merge them in (though I try to only do that for semi recent builds).
But I never leave a forum broken, but from that old of a forum to *now* I usually request PHPMyAdmin access to your server so that I can fix things when the 7.3 upgrade portion breaks (like it usually does).
Will be out of town on Thursday though
