What exactly will our tech guy need to do? We upgraded and we want to resubmit to the search engines so we get the large amt of web traffic and google hits that we used to.

It needs to be submitted from the fileserver, right?

I'm actually going to send this link to our tech guy if he needs any clarification.

thanks

I don't actively go after the search engines anymore.
But for submitting to them.It usually is as simple as posting your url. The link is kinda hiding on most of them.
Now. if you want to submit a site map. Then a little more work is involved.

For example to submit to google you can go here:
http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl

Well seo optimization can be a specialty science.
But really if you persevere most sites will be found on there own over time.
But if you are in a big rush then you need to do some home work.

Also some hosts provide some type of automated site submission to multiple search engines in their control panel.

Hi Ruben,

Sounds wicked complicated.

It seems as though we kinda missed the boat by not doing a "redirect" script during our conversion in Oct 30th, 2009. And it now seems that our window of opportunity has closed -- and that a redirect script would no longer benefit us. (that was my conclusion when googling stuff on the old URL -- it doesn't exist anymore)

thanks again

well, I don't recall what you upgraded from and to.
But the real kick would be if you change to spider friendly urls.
That would cause the spiders to re-index and some members here have complained about duplicate indexing.

IMO, If you stay the course and don't drastically change settings such as bouncing back and forth with friendly urls or meta tags. You should be fine.

Furthermore, it's frustrating that a forum of our size gets so little web traffic.

I agree with Ruben.
I wasn't able to get the upgrade script to redirect a few years ago (when I upgraded).

However, It looks like Google et al picked up the threads incredibly quickly.

To be honest I still have issues with the re-direct from classic.
Which is still there,I don't know why I don't just delete it.
I keep getting 404's on it.

I could never get it to work mate.
In many ways, I am happy I bit the bullet and moved on.

I feel Google has me nicely indexed now smile

Yea, The only reason I left it there is because of members that may have bookmarked some old pages.

Ahhh, that's always going to be a problem.
However I suppose one day you will 'need' to move on.

On my site I have hundreds of articles. The majority contain dead links. There's not much I can do about it really. I did try finding the new URLs - but as you can imagine, it's not practicable.

No, not at all. smile

Our forum started up in April, 2002. We used to have way way more members and way more activity. We are, IMO, sitting on a good amt of content.

To make a long story short, in 2009, my little self climbed up stepped climbed up on to the top deck (control panel) and realized that no one had been steering the ship for a good while.

We upgraded from 6.2 to 7.5.

Well, I'd recommend using a sitemap to feed urls to google via their webmaster tools pages.
