We moved to a new host last night - an 8 hour ordeal, and after everything is up and running, we noticed that we get those characters showing up in sig lines and posts, usually as a substitute for an apostrophe.

Another UBB forum with which we are familiar, has that same problem when they restore their databases after a crash, which has happened to them a few times in the past.

The only reference we can find has to do with Adobe:

http://forums.adobe.com/message/3320557

Anyone have a clue what this is all about in UBB?

We are also having a problem with post times - up to 30 seconds in some threads/forums, near instant in others. We are gonna do a content rebuild tonight to see if that solves it.

The compilation on the server you came from was utf-8, the compilation on the new one is ISO-8859-1. Or vice versa. Either way, the compilations don't match.

I am not at all sure I understand your explanation, but I bet I can find those on our forum who will know exactly what you mean.

Thank you.

Google "character set" and you'll have all the info you could ever want to know

Thanks Giz. . .

We simply did a find and replace - all is well now. We are still having problems with slow post times. I can write a post and hit submit, and it apparently takes no time at all. Or I can write a post and hit submit and it can take up to 30 seconds and even time out.

If it times out, the post IS there though, so the thought is that the post happens quickly, but the acknowledgment is held up for whatever reason. Still working on it smile

The response time from our new hosting provider is way better than the one we were on. On the other hand, this post thing is irritating. We also had an alert that we were generating more than a 1,000 emails in a day, which seemed strange, so we gotta investigate that too.

We don't THINK someone is using us for SMTP relay - none of the bad lists have noticed us, but we don't KNOW that is a fact until we discover how to monitor the flow. Right now we are tearing our hair out because we don't seem to be able to set a password for direct access to mysql.

Just the usual, usual. grin

Have you tried Show Debug Information in Footer to see if it gives you any clues as to what's going on?

Ugh, the word I was looking for was collation, not compilation.

Here's a place to start reading up on it.

As life goes, it mostly turned out to be a server configuration problem by godaddy - took them 7 hours to figure it out and fix it, so it must have been really obscure. My opinion is that we were assigned a virtual private server previously used and not scrubbed properly before being reassigned.
