As much as I like Wordpress, I like UBBT more and wish to replace the WP installation on the root with my UBB installation.
Do I need to do a fresh install on the root or can I just move everything and edit the config.inc.php file?

so when you say 'down' you really mean ( to me ) UP ? ie: currently http://yoursite.tld/ubb <-- ubbthreads install desired http://yoursite.tld <-- top level if so, then no fresh install, but just change config. if other way where you want to move it from top down to /ubb dir, then no fresh install, but just change config too. --- also for WP, i always install that in a secret dir like http://yoursite.tld/wpzeeee <-- ( make up the wpzeee ) then with the permalink structure the way WP can be, you map top level stuff to the hidden directory and mask off the 'wpzeeee' part of the url. the users simply don't see that --- this way you really can have 2 top level looking installs even though the wp is located in a hidden dir

the only thing that will be a gotcha on moving URL for the forum that comes to mind. if users in their posts have URLs to images on the old forum location. or any hardwired URL in their post in general the dynamically generated urls for the board will be fine though.. just keep in mind the user manually generated content also any custom islands you have that hardwire to URLs as well

It's a new install and a fresh new site so no members yet...that's why I wanted to do the changeover now, instead of later.

Yeah, your route sounds good, the only obstacles would have been Search Engine links, bookmarks, etc; but you should be gravy.

You know, you might just put a redirect doc in the root and redirect users to a ubb directory; it'd allow you to use the site for something else later on down the road...

Nah, I consider UBB to be the backbone of my site. Plus, if i want to do something else I can add another site onto the server and point another domain to that.
