Hello. I have just been given the Administrator job of a UBB forum board.

The current version is 6.7 from what I can determine. The owner of the board has said he will pay for the upgrade, but I would have to update it. The problem is the server is in Montana, and I am in Arkansas.

I have never upgraded anything other than on my own computer, and my computer does not have a UBB installed. Is it possible to update remotely to another server in another state? I do have the control of the UBB Control Panel, but everything is stored in Montana. I just access to change things in Arkansas.

I can understand many things about computers and programs, but this one I have never attempted before.

thank you.

Honestly, if you're asking this question I think the task may be a little out of your scope...

Most sites are hosted on servers shoved in cabnets, in air conditioned rooms in large data centers; every part of maintenance is done remotely via FTP, SSH, SCP, etc.

I'd recommend that if you don't have a grasp of the concepts of this that you have him hire out to someone who does; you can easily nerf their install and bring the forum completely offline bu just overwriting one file you're not supposed to...

If you haven't upgraded a UBB Board from 6.7 before I would recommend having us do it for you, it's quite different from a normal software upgrade on your computer.

Ditto the above.

Geographic location is irrelevant for such work. The server can be in the same room or the other side of the world. The process would not change.

You need more than access to the forum control panel. At a minimum, you need FTP access to the web site. Further, you need access to MySQL to create a DB and user for it.

Please do not take offense, but from the way you ask the question, I'd say this is a bit beyond something you should be attempting.

This is not to say that I believe you could not learn how. It is just that you will first need to build a base of knowledge and that would take time.

Pay for the professional upgrade service. You'll thank us later.

And no. I have no dog in this race. wink

Also, if you're hiring out to do upgrades (to the ubb owners or a dev like myself) we request you have at bare minimum FTP Access, Access to an Admin Account on the forum, and access to PHPMyAdmin on the server.

Use Cpanel, read manual or ask for official support. You can do it almost anywhere, as long as you have internet access.

I'd avoid trying to use CPanel to do an upgrade; I've had several instances of it saying something was chmodded and when I double checked via FTP it was not...

To everyone... thank you for your answers. Frankly, I knew the answer already, I just needed something to tell him that it needs to be on his end, since I don't have the equipment, or other things, to do it.

I will tell the owner of the forums to ask UBBSystems to do it for him.

Thanks again, everyone!
