Hello,
I am the newly appointed Admin on our site. And, we got a problem. When sending PM's the following message is displayed.

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_VARIABLE, expecting T_STRING in /home/content/h/o/l/holmgrain2007/html/scripts/viewmessage.inc.php on line 302

The previous Admin unfortunately made some changes to things that seem to have gotten us into this mess. The owner of the site is a bit hard to get a hold of. I would like to fix this, but am not sure if I can without more help from the owner. The board is what I believe to be a pretty old PHP Version 5.3.14. I would surly appreciate any advice. Being somewhat new at this, laymen's terms would also be greatly appreciated. I have of coarse access to the control panel, and if I need to get any other software such as phpMyAdmin that is cool, but is there something that can be done having access to only the control panel, or would I just be spinning my wheels?

Well you'll need to restore the file; the stock files can be found in the .zip file accessible from the member area.

Well this is a classic forum and it looks like you have threads, Don't know what version you have.

But anyway the error usually means you have a typo in the named script of the error message.

Could be the file is corrupted or somebody modified it incorrectly.
So that is why Gizmo suggested to download the software from the members area here and replace that one file:
viewmessage.inc.php
With a virgin untouched copy.

WOW! that is super old.
In fact that version does not exist in the members area anymore.
The oldest version is 6.5.5 in the download area and that is there to upgrade what you have to version 6.5.5 So you can upgrade to the v7.X series.

I see you have two options
have somebody repair that file and correct the code.
Or
Upgrade to a newer version.
That would require you to have current member access.
if your access is expired you can renew it.

One additional item you may try with some success.
If you have some old backups grab the file from there and replace the file on the server.
Just the one file.

Well the issue is something is bad at least in the one file.
not knowing if your predecessor has modified the stock code.
I don't know if you will loose something.
So upgrading will fix bugs related to older versions.
As well as improve security.
Upgrading will correct your problem.
But I would upgrade to the current v7.5.6pl
But you will need to do it in two steps.
First to v6 then to version 7.

Well since you ask there are some here that will chime in.
Gizmo is one or SD.
Also the Vendor will do it??
All will be at a cost.
And all probably will tell you the best thing to do is upgrade.

You'll have to either upgrade to the latest version, the latest version in v6, or hire someone to try to find the issue and fix it.

People who charge for support would be myself and SD or perhaps you could hire UBBSystems to do it if you wanted.

And yes, as Ruben said, we would all recommend that you at least upgrade to the latest .threads, those who preform upgrades would be SD and myself.

The control panel is not really designed to fix programming errors.
So whoever does the fix or upgrade will need access to the site via ftp. So they can upload and download whatever files need to be edited. Or change folder file permissions.
