I have a couple of files in my main /forum folder and I don't recall seeing them before and wondered if someone could tell me: 1) what they are? and 2) if they belong there?
1. palinode.php (27KB)
2. ubbthreads.php (15KB)

Only two files should be in your /forum folder:
index.php (which is basically just a redirector to ubbthreads.php)
ubbthreads.php

What's in that palinode.php file Pilgrim?
There is a hosting company with a similar name - linode.com -- nothing to do with them is it? (Doubtful I know.)

Only two files should be in your /forum folder:
index.php (which is basically just a redirector to ubbthreads.php)
ubbthreads.php Well you could have a couple of other legit files Such as favicon Robots.txt .htaccess. Just to name a few But you should be already aware of them Not part of stock install palinode.php is for sure a stranger

What's in that palinode.php file Pilgrim? There isn't much of anything in the file except for this: Line 1: <?phpLine 15232: ?>

I would wipe it.
Looks like you have 15231 lines of blank line feeds,
Possibly it was a hack attempt.

Before you wipe it - does it have a time-stamp?
Do your logs go back that far?

.htaccess. I'll give you .htaccess but the robots.txt and favicon.ico, according to specifications, should be at ones webroot... In fact, if you never put one on your webroot I'm sure you'll have 404 records of search engines trying to crawl it, it's quite a nuscense :/

Before you wipe it - does it have a time-stamp?
Do your logs go back that far? Server time stamp shows 2/04/2012. I also have: - ubbthreads.php (15KB) 9/01/2011 - ubbthreads1.php (24KB) 2/03/2012

Yep, favicon, Robots.txt and .htaccess are on the webroot.

Well, your ubbthreads.php is likely legit, open it and see; as for the other file, it's not a threads file. What version are you running?

The contents of the ubbthreads1.php file is the same as the palinode.php file..... basically blank with 20,000+ blank lines

Are you sure that EVERY line is blank? I mean, I could create a file meant to masquerade as a legit file with 20k blank lines and one line with the coding to allow me to grab other files...

- ubbthreads1.php (24KB) 2/03/2012 My paranoid mind thinks that this looks distictly suspect. Someone has been making copies of files. Have you at any stage paid or invited anyone to work on your forum?

Well, that could account for it. Clearly you should check with him.  Though, when he's done (non UBB related) work for me, to my recollection he's used 'SD' as part of the renamed file.
