My ISP wants to upgrade everybody from php 5.2 to php 5.4 soon, but when I tried to swop it over, UBB Threads 7.56p1 falls over and just comes up with a generic error (you can't log in to change anything either).
What do I need to do to ensure it's survival in the changeover, and does the fault lie with the ISP or UBB Threads.
I kicked it back to php 5.2 again and all was well after 5 mins.

Have you looked over the webserver logs to see if anything was recorded during your stint on 5.4?
I'm only on 5.3.3 so I'm not 100%

I think it has to do with the newer engine that php uses. At least I had a issue going to 5.4 using wamp. I had to back down to 5.3

Thanks fellas. Had a wee duke at the logs and then...
I had another go at it, but this time putting in the 7.56p2 patch that I found in the Members area, over 7.56p1 I had from last summer, and did some re-builds of posts and stuff and it seemed to work this time (with global php 5.4 engine)... thus far.
I've seen a lot of Forums recently and I have to say I still love UBB Threads simplicity and intuitive control panel... and the support from you guys here. ;D It's appreciated.

Do you have error logging in the UBB on so we can read the error? (when i said it before i meant through the server logs vs ubb)

I was just coming on to ask about this. I am running php 5.3.8. When I look at the PHP site my options are to upgrade to 5.3.19 or to 5.4.9. I don't understand why there are two different choices . Is anybody on 5.4.9? Is it safe to go up to that?

Gizmo - Hmmm I just rechecked my INI file and it appears to be *strict* mode that I might have been thinking of. Could that be it? I see that I do have strict mode set. I remember something choking during one of my upgrades and Rick helping me fix it. I realize that's fairly vague . I should take better notes, clearly. If that's the case, it sounds like maybe I should go up to 5.4 and I'd be OK? Is anybody running on 5.4?

Might be strict; I haven't heard anyone running on 5.4, but if you enable it we could do some troubleshooting... Basically you need to run it until you hit an error; log the error (apache webserver logs, ubb logs, mysql logs, etc) then post them and I can help figure out the problem...

Which particular logs in UBB do you want Gizmo? Or where are they? I was referring to something else less technical earlier.
The PHP Info lists loads of stuff running php 5.2.17 currently (when it runs perfectly before I try to switch it over to php 5.4 on the ISP's control panel - a pop-up based system).
The Logs inside UBB THREADS are: ViewSQL Errors - lists nothing View Admin Logs - irrelevant View Referrer Logs - Irrelevant
My ISP doesn't list anything I can look at inside their control panel.
Problem is when I switch over on ISP's Control Panel from php 5.2 to php 5.4, the earlier 4-line error came up, but I can't get into UBB THREADS at all then to run anything or see anything in our Control panel.

Well, turn on your mysql error logs in the UBB so they log to a file: CP -> Master Settings -> Primary Settings -> Logging Tab
Then you might change "$showerror = 0;" to "$showerror = 1;" in the "libs/mysql.inc.php" file so that errors are shown directly to the browser vs the "only visible to admin's" error being displayed (I'd only do this while testing).
From here, when an error is triggered just write down what's displayed (in any log file, the one for the UBB which should display to the browser with the change to mysql.inc.php, and your server logs) and we can attempt to pinpoint why things won't work.

OK so it sounds like I have to do the p2 patch to prepare for PHP 5.4, and I was going to do that for another member anyway. So maybe I should do this all in conjunction. I will take this all on starting next week to see how it goes.
My forums are running *really* slowly and my upgrade to MySQL 5.5 didn't help much. So I'm hoping this does help.

Well, I tried again to change my ISP's setting from php 5.2 to php 5.49 and... IT WORKED this timeThe only change from the first time earlier in December is that I added last week's new upgrade to the UBB Threads 7.57 So looks like we're good to go now. Happy days.
