Expanding a file on the server

How do I expand a tar.gz file in the server root?

I tired downloading it to my mac, and it gave error messages right at the last minute saying it could not be expanded... tried a number of times even using unstuffy

I did it from cPanel... the files I needed where not there only the back up from the mysql
