Are there are screenshots of the new system so that I can let my global mods know beforehand what to expect and what sort of feature/design changes have been implemented?

There aren't any right now, but I can fashion several tonight when I get back home (I spend weekends with my girlfriend and her kiddos)

Many thanks, Gizmo.  Looks good, are the changes mainly in terms of the design or have a lot of features been added? I can see that the server info has been added to the CP homepage along with information about server load.

There are new features, I am not sure what version you're coming from so all I could do would be to point you to the Changelog Forum.
