Hi experts,
The amount of PMs allowed each user are based on whether they are admins, global mods, mods or users.
Is there any way I can change one user so he can have more PMs? Thanks.

Yes, Create a group say userplus and set the permissions for that group and then add that member to the group. You could have several groups with different permissions. You can add groups all day long and based on number of posts if you choose. They migrate on their own without manual intervention.. I do it with file attachment sizes. But it is the same idea.

It is really simple once you add a group beyond the default ones. If you don't wish to auto promote them then you just goto member management and select the member then add the group you added to that person. Heck you could create hundreds of groups if you want to get crazy.

So, I added a group and just copied permissions from the existing users group. I made the one change of 200 PMs to 500 PMs and added the user to that group, which I named PM. (If you need to refer to it). I wasn't sure if I had to take him out of the user group, but I did.
It seems to be working.
Thanks. Anything I should have done differently?

You should put him back in the user group. Otherwise you need to add the new group to all the forum permissions. Remember the new pm group was only edited for site permissions. Your user group normally has all the forum permissions. Unless you want special forum permissions for just the PM group.
PS, Not sure which pm permission you changed but there are three pm settings in site permissions.

But how about if I added all permissions by copying them from the user group? Or is it simpler to do it the other way?

It would have been simpler to just make the group edit the site permissions for that group and add him to it. But when you say you added all permissions by copying them. I assume you mean the forum permissions for every forum and that works also.
It just depends on how you prefer your groups are setup. If your method works for you then that is fine. I would have only added the new group to forum permissions if I had something more to allow that group to use beyond what the user group has now. Such as larger file attachments, add polls, moderated or not, etc.

Thanks. That's why I come here, I'm just learning. So, since he has the User's site and forum permissions, he is like a user but with more PMs. (I think)
I will say he couldn't get any PMs as he was at 200 yesterday and after you taught me how to do a new group, I was able to send him three as a test.

Yep, The group method can be complex in use if you desire. You really did not break anything. In fact you could use that new group now to enhance forum features for group PM. It just was the hard way for just more pm messages allowed.
As they say: Whatever floats your boat.

Thanks for your help. If I need to add another one, I will listen more carefully. :-)

Well you want to keep the same methodology you use when making changes to group permissions. site, forum,cp. Then if you need to make more changes in the future it works for all.

OK. I didn't think I wanted to do anything with control panel as I didn't want a user to have permissions in the control panel.
