Hi everyone,

Under Permissions | CP Permissions there is a new group called Member Processing (I didn't name it). It has a 1 next to it so it can edit users via the control panel. I have checked the box in the user's permissions for Member Processing. Should she be able to approve new users in the Queue? Previously, she was made an Admin just to be able to approve new users. Or is there a better way?

Thanks.

Bert

The member queue isn't linked with this option; so short answer is that only users with "full cp access" can manage this option.

FYI,
Only the super admin has complete access.
Other admns can't change the super admin
Others that are added with cp access have some additional limits.
Don't ask what they are,But I do know there are several cp options missing.

That's helpful. OK, so the story. Sorry if it's boring, but maybe you can help more.

On our board for Electronic Medical Records and Physicians, there used to be I (Admin), one global mod, and three mods. Everything worked great, the new version got rid of spammers, and I banned the few that got through. Everything was great. Then, corporate decided to add nine new moderators, four of which were admins. Crazy. Just out of the blue made support techs admins and mods.

In trying to clean it up one of the high up IT people who understands UBB and I are meeting every week to fix it (not that it's that hard to fix -- just a strategy).

The problem mostly stems from approving new users. We get about 15 a week, and I generally approve or reject each in less than 24 to 48 hours, which I think is fine. One complained, so they added two admins to help approve. Needless to say, they aren't as good at spotting spammers, although I go by the new version Good IP, Good Email thing.

So, the decision that Brian and I made was to take away the admin privileges of those who don't need them. That is why I tried adding the CP group. But, from what you are saying, it seems as though I will have to make her an admin. Just hate to make a tech support person who knows little about the board an admin simply so she can approve or reject applicants.

Which brings up the question (if I may), can a non-super admin make a user an admin, and can they take that away?

By the way, I am a pediatrician, so feel free to ask any medical questions if you wish smile. Just feel like a freeloader otherwise.

Good question and I had to test it myself to be sure.
In the 7.x version,Yes they can make anyone a admin or delete them as a admin ,but they can't change the super admin.
Which in case you did not know is entered at:
Control Panel » Primary Settings{-}Advanced Options
Main Administrator User Id?
Which by the way sometimes needs to be changed via editing the config.inc.php file in cases where you are changing back to say yourself.

Thanks. Here is something interesting. I think anyway.

11 of the 14 that were automatically made PMs in the CP are on the Top Posters List. Yes we are a vain group. I am proud to say I just went over 9,000 to little or no fanfare I might add, lol.

The other three aren't, but they are fairly active users.

About two months ago, before 7.5.7; a super spammer (to me) got in and sent PMs to everyone on the Top User List trying to sell furniture. No posts to the board. I banned him but not before mass hysteria set in. We have a very active board. Not always good. Have no idea if that had anything to do with it.

Also there are several methods to approve new members without using the approval queue.
For registrations:
Enable Email Verification?
Require a Unique Email per Account?
CAPTCHA verification?

Set the new members group to a new group that has limited powers(no pm,only replies to posts no shout box, etc) and or moderated posts that mods can approve. And auto promote them to the regular group after x number of posts.

Also you can automate stop forum spam:
Auto with Message
Auto with Silent Fail

All that without reverting to manually approving new registrations via the registration queue.

The main administrator user ID (Super Admin) is set to 2.

I wonder if the old owner is still the Super Admin. The company was recently sold (not sure if it were a hostile takeover or not.

Well whoever is member 2 needs to be reviewed. And probably you will need to edit the config file to change it to somebody else.

We have this in place.

I read this when I was perusing the board. Yes, I have no life. This would be good. Maybe even five posts would be enough.

I think Gizmo wrote some of this code? We don't have this.
Dave would have to set this up for me.

All that without reverting to manually approving new registrations via the registration queue.

Don't think I can do that. He is the owner of the company.

Do you find it funny that 11 of the 14 who were auto-promoted are Top Posters. Then again, they would post more. But, I kinda know that ones who would. I suppose I could find out by becoming them, but I have always vowed not to do that as it is an intrusion on their privacy.

By the way, I lived for 30 years in Orlando. Played a lot of semi pro tennis tournaments in Tampa/Clearwater. Why the hell I moved to Maine is beyond me. smile

Well if you want to dig since you have admin access:
GOTO
Control Panel » View Admin Logs
And search through for evidence of permission changes.
The log will show anyone who made changes to the site.
It can be very large if you have not purged it in a while.
Depends on how long ago as to how hard to find.

Also the stop forum spam is stock in version 7.5.7.
I thought you were using it. From a prior post you referenced some info that relates to it.

Thanks I will look. It is extensive. Another reason, I don't take over someone's account. I recall during a huge problem between the users and management, mentioning that admins could do that and, therefore, get to PMs (I think), and they went crazy.

No you don't view the PM's you just see a count with the query.
To actually see the PM's you would need to login as the user which I never do.
As far as the admin log it just gives you who made the change and a generic operation and who it was for.

So there is no privacy intrusion other that who made a edit.

Wow, just found the auto spam settings. So, we could set it to Silent Fail, and they would not be approved.

But, the good applicants would still show up, correct?

I am sorry to take up so much of your time.

It should but to be honest I have ever tried the auto options.
Another reason to visit the admin logs on occasion.

You are required to obtain the :
Stop Forum Spam API-KEY
and test

Enable Stop Forum Spam ?

Yes, I saw that. I think Dave must have set that up, because it works.

The control panel can be a maze to get through. Now, I can't find the Admin Logs. Geez. And, I changed the minimum age from 13 to 15. Seemed a bit young. (That's not in this question though).

Logs are at the bottom left in the cp.
Under tools&info.
Just select the view admin logs tab.
Then build your list per date range.
You can also purge on the next line old entries.

Forgot to hit submit. Sorry. Went through over a year. Brought back memories as I remember some of the logs, lol.

OK. This is serious. I almost majorly screwed up. When I clicked on the number of users that had PM checked, a list of them came up. I selected all including myself. I chose as an action: Delete. I thought it would delete them from that group.

I realized just as I was about to hit delete, that it was going to delete the users for good! Except for their posts. Wow.

One thing I realized the one guy who needs the 500 PMs is now a mod, so he gets 10,000, lol. I should just delete the whole group.

Or at the very least change the super admin password.

Just my 2 cents worth there.
