I have a brand new server I'm moving to that is running PHP 5.6.2 and I'm getting errors about
Fatal error: require_once(): Failed opening required '/romance/forum/libs/functions_forums.inc.php' (include_path='.;C:\php\pear') in C:\aWEB\romanceclass\forum\scripts\cfrm.inc.php on line 24
There is no pear directory in my c:\php directory. Is this not going to work with PHP 5.6.2 or is something else wrong? Do I need to install pear?

OK that was far less painful than I had feared. I installed PEAR, made sure my various directory links were set up properly, and the forums are running. I'm able to read and add new posts.
So for anyone else contemplating using PHP 5.6.2 it seems to be OK.

I was going to say to check your paths; perl is just listed in the servers config path (since it's a pretty standard module, most webservers just add it to the include path) but it shouldn't be required by threads to be run.

Thanks, I now have my multiple UBB boards all up and fine in this new version of PHP so no problems with it.

Any ideas on how to handle mysql connections?
I attempted (briefly) to get UbbT 7.5.8 running under PHP 5.6.3 and it kept throwing errors over a missing mysql_pconnect(), which I assumed was because it has been deprecated and (I assume at this point) removed. Supposedly, we are supposed to use pdo_mysql_ or mysqli_ going forward
I briefly considered hacking the database/SQL class to switch over to using msqli_ methods, but I didn't have time to follow through it all.
Should I have ran into those issues, or is it more likely that I missed something (even though I *swear* I had php.ini setup correctly).

As I understand it "mysql_pconnect" is used for persistent connections only which I don't use. In fact it has been suggested even though offered in UBB setup not to use it.
Control Panel » DB, Paths & URLs Use Persistent Connections?
If that is enabled I would turn it off.
If you can't open the control panel, you could edit the includes/config.inc.php file.
To disable it, it would be like: 'PERSISTENT_DB_CONNECTION' => ' ',
