Hi
It seems that we have scammers login in on our forum. They publish a stolen image of a motorcycle and offer it cheap.
my moderator of our sales board asks if I can set up a rule that prevent new user from posting in our sales board unless they for example have posted 10 times on other boards.
I understand what he is after but have no clue how to arrange for this to happen. Do you guys follow what i'm saying? and if solo you have any idea on the subject. sort of making it harder to scam on our forum. Thanks

The only real centralized database of troublesome users is Stop Forum Spam, and that doesnt really cover that type of user..

Morgan, by "other boards" do you mean forums within your site? I have mine set up so that a user can not post in my classifieds section unless they have at least 20 posts in other areas.

When I wrote the Stop Forum Spam modification, before it was pushed into the stock product, there was a Login Detection portion which didn't make it into the release (which was a large part of the modification, as it checks returning users against the database); you can add this functionality at: [7.5.7+] Stop Forum Spam - Login Detection. It could deter any users if they've scammed on other forums and been reported.

Gizmo That might be a good idea, my only problem is whenever there is a version upgrade i have to redo this. NOTE: If you're having problems with API timeouts ("Unable to Connect to Stop Forum Spam Database" error) you can adjust the API URL in login.tpl to use: www.stopforumspam.org/api?ipto api.stopforumspam.org/api?ip is it just to change the "www" to "api" ? what will happen/be better then? How does one tell one have this connect problem? is it in any logs?

Well back to your question. It is possible to set up a group that has access to one forum. And using the auto promote feature after xnumber of posts. all via the group management. Then permissions for the first group to limit posts and the new group to allow posts But you need to structure the groups so prior (default)groups don't have access. But there are issues. for posting say you implement 10 posts as required. even existing members that have say 300 posts would be blocked after the change until they post one more times somewhere.
Also if you attempt to say moderate the first 10 posts. A spammer can just post 11 times even if not approved and they are allowed.
Then last from memory, The forum permissions structure is somewhat convoluted. Meaning the greater than less than fields. The default group need to be moderated for all forums first.

How does one tell one have this connect problem? is it in any logs? They're extremely rare, and you'd notice when you try to login.

Also for stop forum spam. There is a test connectivity link at: Control Panel » Primary Settings. It will inform you if you are connected or not.

Thanks for taking time to bring ideas, No matter what it seems that one cannot be certain to be sure so I will go back to my moderator and tell him we just need to monitor the sales board more closely for scam attempts. After all it is more likely that a scammer will lower the price enough to bate that it becomes obvious that its a scam.
We'll see if this is the way to go. However if not then I might come back to look for this.thanks again. Cheers

Sorry - I was dealing with many hours of server and hosting company disaster.
I see that Ruben answered your question regarding using groups to restrict the classifieds forum. I have been doing that for several years, and it has kept the scammers away. My classified forums are also moderated, so that each post has to be approved.
