Hi everyone,

I know we can embed jpgs and pngs etc. into a post. And, we can use a URL to connect to a document on a website.

Is it possible to attach a document directly to a post? Or can documents be stored onsite?

Thanks.

You will need to enable attachments through the permission editor on a forum by forum basis; then as Isaac stated above, you will need to adjust the allowed file extensions for your site.

Also add "docx" - the current Microsoft Word document extension.
Beginning with Office 2007, the default format for saving Word documents is .docx.

So, per Isaac, I added a PDF. I did this by using a comma after the previous extension. There are no spaces, so it looked like:

.doc,.pdf,.xls

On the forum permissions, all I saw that would pertain to enabling were:

-- Can download attachments: All 1's except for guests
-- Maximum size of file attachments: All 0's -- states max is 200M. Should I put 200M in all except for guests?
-- Total # of file attachments: All 0's. I put 100 in each except for guests?

I am allowed 200M, so should that be written as 20000

So, now that everything is set for a particular forum at least for me as the admin, how do I attach the document?

Use the "File Manager" link while creating a post, just as you use for adding JPG, PNG and other files you've specified.

Thanks. Under our posting window we have:

Markup ------ using UBBCode (in a dropdown where it or HTML or both can be selected)

Post Options

HTML is enabled
UBBCode is enabled

(I noticed HTML is disabled on yours)

To the right of this stuff (where yours says File Manager (Total Files: 0)

mine says under "using UBBCode"

Poll Manager (Total Polls: 0)

I WISH I COULD UPLOAD PNGS TO YOU, BUT I DON'T KNOW HOW. We just use SD's applet (which I know some don't like), but it works for us.

For the File Manager, that last screenshot was from UBBCentral.com - this forum. Which is UBB.threads 7.5.9.

I am running "UBB.threads 7.6.0 Work In Progress"

I guess thats the drawback to using unsupported custom code.

There is no official support for it unless you go back to whoever wrote and installed that non-standard code which you're having problems with. Especially when you're having problems with it, like right now. Sorry :/

So we are using:

UBB.threadsâ„¢ PHP Forum Software 7.5.8

We should still be able to have access to File Manager, correct?

Sorry, trying.

On this forum (ubbcentral.com), you and I have the exact same access. Our accounts are basic user accounts. I am not an admin or moderator here. So if I can post PNG images here, you should also have that access smile

Well, I wouldn't say we are haven't trouble with it. I am fine not being able to directly attach documents. Embeding pngs and jpgs is generally good enough for us. I know where to find the person who coded it. I didn't know it was all or nothing.

I can only support the code that I have access to. As much as I would like to help you, I just dont have access to your custom code. So as far as that is related, you need to go back to whoever created that, and ask that person for support.

This is from the "index.php" within the home directory of your UBB.threads install:

Thanks. Ironically, I would never have thought to contact UBB Systems for any support for anything. Not like I would for Microsoft, ESET, Adobe, etc. Never even knew it existed. I know that may sound strange given how much you use and work with UBB. I just use the forum and never really think about it as it has worked for nine years.

I don't mean that in a bad way. Just trusted the person the same way I trust Ruben or Gizmo.

I basically think this means it can't be done. At least I learned something. I didn't even know it could be done in the past. So, now I know it can.

Thanks a lot for all of your help. I really appreciate it. smile

HI thanks. May I ask a question? If so, see below.

I saw that you embedded an image. When I use the SD thing, it allows the image to embed plus get larger when you click on it.

When I embed an image using the File Manager (which I like), it seems a bit small. Probably the same size but hard to read. I think it can be downloaded, but that isn't the greatest option. Do you have any comments or suggestions?

Thank you.

Bert

The option you want to look at is
Control Panel » Feature Settings
Max width for images used in posts?
Specified in px. Uses browser scaling. Leave blank to disable.

Yours was set to 400px I increased it to 600px just now.

It can be more just bear in mind if you make it to large it will cause scroll bars to be used in the forum when viewing the image.
Meaning you may have a bigger image but the user will need to scroll back and forth to see other content.
For an example see this test post at this board:
https://www.ubbcentral.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/256629/test#Post256629

Thanks Ruben,

My guess is since it has been years that the hard drive used for these documents, images or other attachments is fairly small. Given the price of hard drives, it would make sense to add something like a 4 TB drive or possibly more.

What would happen to the current attachments. Do they have a link that would still take them to the old drive?

I am not sure at this time with SD's hack on how to disable future uploads and still maintain visibility with existing uploads.
Other than disallow any file types in the future and delete the icon link in I assume the markup panel.

Well, I would like to get started. I think, given the extra pixels, it just makes sense to use the File Manager. I suppose it would be simple for me to do. I just need to decide the size allowed and number allowed for each user. If I recall, that is per thread/topic. Or forum? Certainly, not the entire board.

I have asked a bit about the cpanel. Is that helpful in determining the size of the drive? Again, if the host of the board is going to add a larger HDD, I would want to do that first. Or, as I asked in one of the other five hundred places I have asked, lol, does each file that is saved to board's drive, keep its link to that drive? I mean, those images, etc. don't have to be copied over to a new drive?

I would think since I have been using this board for over 11 years, the hard drive size has to be less than 512 GBs. I am not even sure if they made drives that big before. Then again, if we have a hosting company, they could just be upgrading the hardware on their end without our knowing.
