In the control panel of our forum under forum settings, there is a list of forums in order based on the number associated with it. For example:

5
10
15
20

My question is do they have to be multiple of 5s or 10s. Could we have just started with 1, 2 and 3. Of course I see the benefit of having gaps so one doesn't have to change all the numbers or some of the numbers if you add another and want it in a different place.

So, first question is If I want a forum to be after the forum associated with 5 and before 10, giving it a number 9 would accomplish that and be fine to do?

Also, I might make a new forum and do this. But, if I want to move an existing forum (because it is much more important and relevant than one that is higher), by changing the number form let's say 20 to 9, would that not only move it up but not cause any issues or problems with the board?

Thanks. Once again, I made an easy question as difficult as possible, lol.

Are you talking about the "order" box? if so, it's whomever set things up on your forums; likely so they could add things in between without having to set everything later down the line. As it ships, the product does the order via one's, not fives or tens.

Well I took a peek and you have forums 1-17 but forum 11 and 15 are gone.
I would surmise that they were deleted at one point in time .
Because the current version still allows you to disable or delete a forum.

I am not aware of any version that allows you to number the forum.
A net new forum is going to be assigned the next number above the last highest number regardless if it is active or disabled or deleted.

Back in the classic days it was able to delete a forum but was suggested to never do so.
It was recommended to disable the forum and recycle it for new use.

As far as sort order when viewing in the control panel it goes by something like forum title then by date added then I think by category name.

Now the order field does jump about quite a bit.
As Giz noted that is normal so if say you want to add a new forum and be the second one displayed then
in your case it is 5 and 8 for the current sort.
So you could add a forum and set the order to 7 or 6 and it would be the second forum displayed for visitors. Instead of having to reorder every forum if they were say 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 etc. every time you add a forum.
So to answer your question. Yes you can reorder the display anytime.
Just bear in mind that you may need to change the order on multiple forums if they overlap.

We may be talking about different things but I am able to change the order of the forums by changing the number Order number in Forum Settings.

Can we talk a bit about the guy who hosts boards. How do you think we are structured now? Charlie says that Pri-Med and AC and other sites we use are on different boards. They are thinking of combining them.

Is this how we work now? Like do we have our board on one of their sites? But, there really isn't a true host admin. I think Charlie is interested in having someone who knows UBB host the site. It's just a matter of MX records and ARECs. I think. Would your friend who hosts them be aware of any downtime like we had yesterday and last week. Would he just be on top of it? And, do upgrades in the background. You know, the board will be down from 2 am to 4 am for maintenance. They would already have the cpanel.

Well the first issue to deal with is AC piggybacked on the same database as ubb.
There was no reason with a dedicated server unless they thought of merging logins for both.
And it is like 1.73gb where the ubb tables is very small like 124Mb.
I have no idea of the traffic for AC, but the forum is nothing.
But first steps would be to segregate the database tables.
One for AC and one for UBB.

Second to host just the ubb on another provider would be cumbersome.
If you want to use the same domain name.
I guess Charlie can instigate the call and see if it can be accomplished and maintenance agreements

But mx records are for email.
Not sure what you mean by AREC

Currently you still have database connection issues at least every other day.
And just two days ago the sever log reported the user table was corrupted.
I attempted a repair from the ubb control panel but I don't like doing that with out a backup and a means to restore.

As far as order number ,yes we are talking about the same.
You can change the order number to anything you want.
(5,10,15,20- 2,4,6,8- 1,2,3 4 - 100,200,300,400- 5,23,52,106)
It is just a matter of planning for the future forums you may add. And how much space you want to give yourself so You don't need to reorder every single forum when you add one.

Yeah MX is for email, sorry.

AREC does something with it too.

An A record is the IPv4 address of the server, an AAAA record is the IPv6 address of the server, and the MX record is the host (or hosts) that handle email (the priority listed with an MX record defines which to use first, second, etc).

Thanks. I have always thought it interesting that my email host has four MX records. It just doesn't seem like I would need that many.

It's just for fallback, if one server is down then the next server would still be there to catch the mail; otherwise the remote user's server would attempt delivery until it'd ultimately fail and they'd get a bounce message.

GMail (or Google Apps even) has 7.

Speaking of EMail, guess who's been playing with the ability to connect to a remote server and check bounced email automatically...

It's a facetious remark, Google wouldn't be capable of parsing your bounced emails through your UBB.threads database... Whereas I'm working on a script that would.
