I have an old member who hasn't been able to log in since August. I haven't changed anything, but he thinks it might be because he has a special character in his login name. Can I change that (in the tables, I guess) without breaking it? Or should we be looking at something else?

It has been a long time since I have done that. So I don't recall what impact it had other than possibly he will need to wipe his cookies.
Anyway I would just look and see if there are indeed special characters.
That could be in member management or even become the member and see if you have any issues.
Of course if you do that you will need to ask him if it is okay.

Then I would just add a new account manually give him the login to see if he can in fact login for a test.

You never did say what was the issue with the login.
Like no error or invalid login error.

He has always had a special character... the copyright symbol.

And you are correct; I did not ask him what error message he was getting.

I looked at my logs since the last time he logged in, and I have not changed any settings. He has been an active member since my Classic days, which ended probably in 2003.

well then it could be just a matter of another login issue.
I can say that I upgraded to win10 64 on 3 of 4 pc's at home and I can't login at all at this site with the new EDGE browser.
It just accepts my login and returns to the summary page showing that I am not logged in.
No errors what so ever.
I even turned off virus protection and the firewall and I lowered the security setting in the browser. no go.

Just heard back... he is getting "username not found," and it is multiple platforms and multiple systems.

It is one of my sponsors, so it is kind of critical.

when he is at the login screen, instead of entering his username where it asks for a username, have him login with his email address in that box.

you can login with either your username or email address, even though the prompt is only asking for username.

ignore this comment, as it is incorrect for the version you currently have installed.

I will be posting a sql solution in my reply below...

1) Go to "Control Pannel"
2) Under the "Tools & Info" section at the bottom, go to the "Database Tools" page
3) Select the "SQL Command" tab
4) Copy/paste the sql command from below, with the correct changes, then click the "Execute" button to perform the action.

DOUBLE-CHECK THAT THE USER NUMBER IS CORRECT FOR THE USER YOU WANT TO GIVE THE NEW LOGIN NAME TO.

UPDATE ubbt_USERS
SET USER_LOGIN_NAME = 'newloginname'
WHERE USER_ID = 'usernumber'

newloginname = the new user name you want to update the user with
usernumber = the user's current member number. you can find this by viewing the number shown in the url of their user profile, and within that page.

---

example:
UPDATE ubbt_USERS
SET USER_LOGIN_NAME = 'SuperSteve'
WHERE USER_ID = '3372'

This SQL command would update your login name on UBBCentral.com to "SuperSteve" since your user number here is 3372.

My "customer" finally tried it during the night, and he was able to log in successfully.

Thanks again.
