I was looking for something in my archives and came across my first message board, Ultimate Bulletin Board 5.45.

My how things have progressed since then. It was a great blast from the past to look through some of the postings and how it was laid out way back then, the simplicity, and pretty much a bare bones UBB.

I never administered an UBB5 but I remember it being insecure and harsh on the webserver while content kept growing.

One large forum I remember (1000000+ posts) kept running into trouble and directories used to store forum data (like the posts) had to be logically adapted on the server to manage the load. Another smaller (yet cult-like) forum had 2 busy administrators who were out a lot, and the forum kept getting hacked somehow. They injected code into the frontpage (perhaps in the template files?) leaving it unusable. And without the cellphones and WiFi stuff we have today, it took days, sometimes even weeks, before the forum was restored to an usable state.

That said, looking through The WayBack Machine at my favorite old forums (go to https://archive.org), I indeed like how simple and usable forums were back then. Back then they were my primary form of online communication, and it still is in a way.

I'm assuming that you're referencing UBB.Classic, which was coded in Perl and stored all activities in flat files, versus UBB.threads which was/is coded in PHP and activities are stored in a database (MySQL).

The shortcomings of UBB.Classic was that, since storage was done in flat files, the system would get lagged from all of the read/write activity to the local hard disk's; this was especially bad for more popular sites (as more activity means more io/wait).

At one point, a small organization was formed with the goal of developing a PHP port of UBB.Classic; this group is known today as vBulletin. The fun part to think about is, they tried to sell their product to Infopop, which wasn't interested since they acquired WWWThreads, which they renamed to UBB.threads.

Yes it was the Classic UBB. Since that version many things have changed and had gotten much better. As the Internet evolved so has the UBB. The guys who design and write the software always have great new ideas and it appears they never fall short of creating an awesome product.
