Google Plus link should get rid of the '+' sign before the user number.

It uses exactly what the user enters.

So if the user doesnt follow the example directions just above the field entry, they will get exactly what they enter.

Yes. But the link nowaddays does NOT use the plus sign. So it being in the code breaks the profile link.

Maybe old profiles CAN still use the plus.

I see the problem here.

Custom Profiles require the + sign in the URL.
Regular old profiles (not custom) dont use the + sign.
