If I put a link in the Shout Box it will stretch out the Box and eventually break (wrap) to the next line in the middle of a word.

Why is that?

What browser are you using? IE and Edge I don't believe respect the <wbr> tag; modern browsers like Firefox and Chrome do and should split long strings using the <wbr> tag.

IE seems to be the one that stretches out the Box. What I don't understand is why it breaks/wraps at all.

Chrome doesn't stretch out the box, but it seems (to me) to break the url in strange places.

Can you splain?

In chrome:

l-contractor.net/for
ums/ubbthreads.php/f
orum_summary.html

Why makes it break like that?

It breaks to allow it to wrap, so that it doesn't stretch out the chat. What makes it do it? The <wbr> tag is inserted after so many characters which makes tells the browser that it's "ok" to break there.

I get that it breaks to allow it to wrap, but it didn't seem to have any rhyme or reason to it that I could see.

with the IE example it goes about 60 characters before it decides it's ok to break. I figured it would either break within the constraints of the container or not at all. confused

The Chrome example, I thought looked like was breaking inconsistently, but now that I look more closely I see there are similar #s of characters in each line. facepalm

The <wbr> tags are inserted every 20 characters in the shoutbox, your browser decides where would be best to break a long word, based on how wide the sidebar is.

Further reading, and about as in depth as it really needs to be HTML <wbr> Tag

well, you know what?

I just realized I'm using Explorer 11 and just checked the box to allow installing new versions automatically.

Any problems with that and I'm coming back... smile

Thanks for the info. I know IE is only about 25% of the Browser market right now. It's just an old habit I have to break.

It's probably Embarrassing, but I'm still using Frontpage for my websites. It's not that I don't have other options, It's just that I'm more comfortable with it.
I was used to viewing pages between IE and Netscape and designing for 14" Monitors @ 480 and 640 - so, I'm a little slow to get up to speed.

Anyway, enough rambling... apparently IE 11 doesn't break when it should. I've just consented to an IE update. To be continued... smile

It depends on who you ask, Wikipedia has a pretty good writeup Usage share of web browsers that shows the data for a couple of different sources.

Wow, that really shows IE in the Dumps.

I was going on my own website stats which I thought showed IE at 25% the last time I looked.
I just checked and it's now between 11-12%
