Our forum has a worldwide audience. Some of our members are using 2400 baud modems, so we have a strict no posting policy for images. We tell our members to use image hosting sites and put a link in their post. (We allow avatars only for "staff", i.e. mods and admins)

Now the owner has asked me a question that I can't answer.

In reading through the members forum at the UBB site, it seems, with the 7.6.0 update, we might be able to do what we want to do finally... But let me bounce this off you to see if I'm understanding it correctly ...

UBB calls images "attachments"

It is possible to set the permissions to allow uploading "attachments" and even specifying permissions for groups of users as to which forums they can have permission to upload an attachment to

That thumbnails are generated for attachments.

That we can specify/limit file formats (say just to .jpg, .gif, .png for example and NOT allow .doc or .txt
I'm not even sure this is possible. I know I can limit attachments to specific forums, and I know I can create gallery forums where pictures can be posted, but I'm not clear on how to handle permissions. Could a create a new group for image posting? I think it would be best to do that to have the ability to ban someone who was abusive from posting images while not banning them from all the forums.

Pointers to docs are fine. Advice from anyone with experience doing this would be appreciated.

UBB.threads has always had attachments, and has had Gallery Forums for much of the v7.5 series. Permissions are all handled through the Forum Permissions area (for both features), the difference really is:

Gallery Forums are treated like a standard, run of the mill photo gallery, images are compressed as their uploaded. Attachments are basically the same thing, only they are not compressed and you can enter the TYPE of files to allow to be uploaded (hence "attachments" as it's more than photos), and images are not compressed (until v7.6.1 is released).

With attachments there are several areas for customization (and as I'm building this list off of v7.6.1 it'll vary wording based on whatever version you're currently using; keep in mind that most of this has existed for most of v7.5.x):
Forum Permissions: CP -> Permissions -> Forum
Attachment Settings: Attachment Options: CP -> Master Settings -> Feature Settings -> Attachments Tab (Attachment storage directory, URL, and Allowed Extensions)
Gallery Settings: CP -> Master Settings -> Gallery Settings (graphics library, max height/width, image quality)

The following are attachment permissions for each forum (again, in the forum permission section):
Can Download Attachments, Max Size of File Attachments, Total # of Attachments

You can toggle the size of the "Show Images Inline" option by going to CP -> Display Settings -> General -> Topic & Post Page Settings and changing "Max File Size for Displaying Uploaded Images Inline" setting (if you WANT them to automatically display vs display as a list of uploads).

Thanks. Guess I need to talk to the owners some more to see exactly what they're trying to accomplish.
