Our users reported some odd behavior, so I investigated. Here's what's happening. If you enter a forum, then click on the Forums link, the forum is now marked as read. (The icon on the left changes from yellow to gray.) I'm pretty sure this was not the default behavior before. If you reenter the Forum, the icon to the left of every thread is gray, indicating that they are read. Did I miss a setting somewhere? Or is this normal behavior? Forum: https://www.stovebolt.com/ubbthreads/UbbThreads Version: 7.6.0 PHP Version: 5.6.32 MySql Version: 5.5.58

the icon and color depend on which style icon set you have installed.
there are two icons for read status. one is for ALL POSTS IN THIS FORUM HAVE BEEN READ the other is for THERE ARE UNREAD POSTS IN THIS FORUM
Some Style icon sets use a blank.gif for their ALL READ icon. Some Style icon sets use a greyed-out (monochrome) version for that gif icon.

OK, I understand that. But why would the entire forum and every post in it be marked as read as soon as you enter it? I don't recall seeing that behavior before. I noticed that the 7.6.1 upgrade includes a NEW beside unread posts. That seems like it would resolve this issue, so I'm going to upgrade today and see if it does.

While I agree with the issue it has always worked that way for me using firefox and explorer and edge.. If you visit a forum with multiple unread posts. Even if you don't read them and back out and go back they all show as read. Per forum.
Maybe a long standing bug that has never been addressed?

I changed to two different styles, and the result was the same. I don't think it's a style issue. The mark-as-read function doesn't seem to be working correctly.

If you stay current on a forum you really don't notice it. Because there may only be one or two posts not read. But visit a site that you rarely visit and you see that happen very easily. When there are several posts not read. Where active threads usually stays correct and maintains the unread status. Or at least it seems so. Maybe not.

IIRC this feature has always marked the forum icon as read once you access the forum when it has new messages.

Did it also mark all the threads in the forum as read as well? It seems that any unread threads should remain unread until they are read.

Did you double click the forum "new messages" icon? If so, it should mark it as read.

greyed out forum icon is "nothing new since your last visit"
that's how the php code reads, when I look at it.

I understand that, but, when you enter a forum, ALL the unread messages are being marked as read. Is that how it's supposed to work? Frankly, I don't recall, because I don't use the forum that often. I just maintain it and the underlying server.

What code would I have to change to have threads marked as unread until they are actually read by the user? Does anyone know how to make that mod?
