Hi

I have version 7.6.2

In Who's inline we get loads of views on a few topics.
I have deleted the ohther so here is one that I'm curious about
We have a for sale forum where members can post bikes for sale, one guy did he wrote he posted the bike on craigs list and put a link to that same advert on craigs list.
I see that there has been 174000 vievs in 8 days, its not normal its 50-100 times more that normal.
Then I see a pattern that a bounch of ip addresses is "viewing" every minute ocr with a few minutes apart,
almost all are from
State/Region: Virginia
City: Ashburn
Latitude: 39.0481 (39° 2′ 53.16″ N)
Longitude: -77.4728 (77° 28′ 22.08″ W)
Postal Code: 20149

Its all same town and zip code. Any ideas why this could happen?

Geolocation is not very precise, generally the closest large city is what is used as far as locations are concerned; so everyone from around Ashburn, VA may end up with a similar location. This is especially true when using free geolocation databases, such as the one in UBB.threads v7.7.

Ok so do you think I should drop it?
we have normally normally 50% visitors from USA and maybe a large portion from west coast and not that many known from Virginia so
I do wonder what is happening, maybe a thousand views would be normal and a very small number from Virginia.

Anyway I just wanted to ask about it.
Thanks

Well, if his Craigslist listing is valid I'd accept the temporary burst of activity; may lead to repeat visitors... Plus, the Craigslist posting will unlist itself once its run its coarse.

the craigs advert has expired but the views keeps coming.
I don't think there was a link from Craigs list to my forum only a link from us to crags list so that should not drive any traffic.

Anyway I thank you for your replies

As a admin when viewing the who is online You should see the referrers to see where they come from..
And or goto logs and elect the referer log.
But it probably is huge now.
You might need to clear it and see what happens later.
At least it will tell you where they are coming from if they clicked a link to get to that post.

Couldn't see anything in referers log that stands out
I found the Search Engine Agents list and updated it.
Maybe it will give me a clue tomorrow

AWS (Amazon) does a lot of things.

Especially have a look at AWS Elastic IP addresses -
https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/elastic-ip-addresses-eip.html
An Elastic IP address is a static IPv4 address designed for dynamic cloud computing. An Elastic IP address is associated with your AWS account. With an Elastic IP address, you can mask the failure of an instance or software by rapidly remapping the address to another instance in your account.

In addition, the way attachments are handled now, is that anyone hotlinking to a post attachment will go through the UBB.thread security check. Previously, some attachments were directly linking to the files directly on your forum server. A few versions back, this security was corrected so that only users/user groups with access were able to view those files.

A side effect of that is that the end user viewing the image will now get added to your Whos Online list, since they are being checked for access.

Prior, it would only appear in your server logs, not UBB.threads logs. As for why your post-view count is going up, may be related to a bot getting stuck trying to index your site, or attack it. or even a malicious user who had setup their browser/system to auto-refresh your page every "XX seconds", with the intent of purposely slowing down your forums.

Scripts such as described are easy to find. In fact, I've used them in the past for their intended use... To watch a sale-page for if an item is marked as back-in stock/available. [example/off-topic] Buying a Google Nexus (now Pixel) on release day? lol. Refresh that page every few minutes to see if another wave has opened up, allowing you to jump in that short window of time where you can pre-order it.
