I have just installed version 7.7.4, moving from 7.5.9.
Now the main page showing the list of topics within a forum has lost all the grid lines. I miss the horizontal and vertical grid lines of the older layout. Can I change something to get them back?

That should be in your style editor.
Borders are there they are a light grey
I would suggest you export the style and edit the style name in the file and then import it as a new style so you don't hose up the stock style

Control Panel > Styles > Edit or Add a Style > [SELECT YOUR STYLE]
Add to this to the EXTRAS section if you've heavily customized your style:
Code
table{border-collapse:separate;border-spacing:1px;}

-OR-

ADVISED:
It looks like you are using a 15 year old stock style (from 2004 / 2006). Learn more about updating to the recent version in the UBB.threads Style Packs thread:

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll have a look.

I'm terribly inexperienced... How can you tell what style I am using?

I would look in the cp styles it will show which one is the default.
But I would follow what was suggested and install the style packs from the member section it will save a lot of work.

By how the style looks and by its name; styles in v7.7+ are all mobile capable, themes prior to those releases look completely different.
