Hi--

Do you have to post something here in order to login?

How *do* you use this forum?

:-Doug.

PS: Is it a good idea *not* to give your e-mail and url on this board?

Both the login and logout links are on the upper portion of the page on the left side. For instance, when you are logged in, you will see >>Hello "Your name", and right below that is the logout link.

Even after logging in to post. Guess frowns don't work, either.

The code is a little different on OpenTopic then it is on Threads.

Instead of frown just use : ( without the space in the middle. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="images/icons/frown.gif" />

I was going to post a link to more information on UBBCode and how to post the smilies (we call them Graemlins), but it appears that the link is dead. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="images/icons/frown.gif" /> I'll get it fixed.

I'm using MSIE 5.0

What I want to know is how to use the Instant Graemlins at the bottom of the post screen--am I supposed to click on them or drag and drop or are they just there to tantalize with no real purpose? Also, the same for the "Instant UBBCodetm."

To use the Gramelins, click the image of your choice. It will appear at the end of your text. If you would prefer it elsewhere in the post, just copy and paste the new code to the location within your post you wish. Until they fix the link to the info page for ubbcode you can use the Graemelins at least. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="images/icons/frown.gif" />

Nope, does not work for me.

And how do you login here without posting, and how logout at all? (My original questions). <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="images/icons/frown.gif" />

I'm pretty sure you have Javascript turned off - see the other thread...

The login/logout & instant buttons will only work with Javascript on.

Just a hint...why show the smilies at all if the user doesn't have JavaScript? It should be easy to detect this and change it.

Also, login/logout based on the user having the browser configurations you want doesn't make any sense to me. JavaScript is not necessary for performing a login or logout so it should not be required by the software. In addition, a server-side language could be used to print that message on the front page without any problems.

BTW, this is an example of the board should be W3T. I'm recognizing problems and concerns in OpenTopic. That's great for improving OpenTopic, but if this was W3T, we could be noticing all the little things there and providing feedback.

Your suggestions are welcome Ankh, but your attitude is not.

You have a good idea... I'll make sure that the OpenTopic developers see this thread (if they haven't already).

Is it calling incompetent the highly paid designers who use dreamweaver and friends to hide the fact that they missed out on HTML 101? Or my oblique reference to an entity that charges up to $15,000 just to get started with a package missing the most basic interface design considerations?

Sorry if this offends you but i've been offended by these kinds of oversights. My particular grudge originates in a former programming job that involved fixing the mess left by the whiz-bang designers so they actually worked, and they were paid more than me! It's also no fun to surf the web with javascript off when so many sites require it for navigation, seemingly clueless to the golden rule of providing unscripted alternatives.

When you guys decide to hire a design/security consultant, remember that my extensive knowledge is available at reasonable rates.

Ankh, your unhappiness with Infopop, its employees and products has been quite clearly displayed all over this forum in a manner some would call rude.

However, you have brought some valid points and suggested some interesting ideas and improvements. That is appreciated.

I'm closing this thread as I believe the original question was answered.

If you have any other questions or wish to continue this conversation offline, please email me at [][email protected][/] or call at 206.283.5999.
