How can I add a menu item to the menu where Portal, Forums, Member List, etc...is?

You will need to edit a file.
templates/default/header.tpl
find
{if $config.ENABLE_MAIN_PORTAL}
below that it is obvious ,just copy a area and change it to your liking.
and paste it where you want it.
