In the above attached an infographic you can see several standard banner sizes, most advertisers should fit into one or the other.
An issue you may face however, for mobile users, these huge banners are going to stretch the viewport and break mobile capability, be sure you're utilizing the CSS max-width (style="max-width: 100%;") so that your html image additions scale with the browser size.
Under the HTML Includes there are two places for a banner ad:
Default Forum Header is shown before the forum loads
Default Forum Footer is show after the forum loads
You can also add an "Ad Island" which places a Custom Island between your first and second posts by creating a custom island in the control panel and then editing each forum to select this custom island as an Ad Island". I utilize this on
A Gardeners Forum but I've modified the code to display in numerous places in a topic (I utilize Google Adsense for mine).
IIRC Hero Images are generally 360 wide and 200 pixels tall for mobile or 1280 wide and up to 720 pixels tall for desktop at a 16:9 aspect ratio image set to a max-width of 100% so it will scale with the screen size; be careful with the file size of these images as they can be fairly large.
