ok, it looks good. few bugs here and there, but it looks like they are being seriously attended to.
so what's next? i run a ubb.classic board atm; should i be upgrading to threads now, or should i wait until a final version 7 is available? and what about the upgrade programs?

no don't upgrade to threads as the new importer will bring over many more settings.
Wait for UBB7 as the importers will be bundled with it.

It is HIGHLY recommended that you stay on the latest version of UBB.Classic as the current public importer ignores things like polls and some profile options. We've spent load of time on the importer and have just about every field ported over.

Okay, I have a fairly stooooopid question to ask ... it sounds like the importer will take into consideration the various hacks that people may have installed in their classic boards; is this correct?
I was going to ask if it was best to import a "clean board" vs. a "hacked one" ... but from what I've read, mebbe it doesn't make a difference ...

well, some of the common ones. It imports your current shoutbox and topic views. Planning on importing events too, if I can figure some things out
I also made sure that it'll correctly parse the posts that have the common custom ubbcodes.
Let me put it this way
Nothing on the hacked board should break the importer. I've tested it on my boards, which are modded plenty
