Guys, I'm in search of a free chat program I can add to my board.

Currently I have an AOL IM Chat Room set up on the site, but I can see that being a problem for people who don't want to use IM.

Hoping that there is a proven chat program to use with UBBThreads that a user does not have to have a certain software loaded on his/her personal computer.

Advice on this is appreciated...

I wish I had some better news but a Free chat room which is quality enough to run on your site without your host shutting you down for cpu overload may be a tough row to hoe.

Your best bet to see if anything has been sourced and started will be at http://www.sourceforge.net more likely than not. You may want to ask at http://www.threadsdev.com, too.

Checkout the "Forum Design Integration" forum at threadsdev. There are several Chatroom integrations that are fairly low cost -
JPilot uses an IRC channel - which you might be able to get somewhere for free. And it integrates nicely with Threads, allowing people to use the same usernames - and show up in "whos online" as "In Chat" etc....

There's also nice integrations for Raidersoft Chat - which I blieve offers a free (ad supported) version as well.

You may also wish to check out www.chattersonline.com as I know at one time they offered banners that allowed you to open a free chatroom. - Doesn't integrate well, but it's free. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

But there's all sorts of "Chat" chat over at www.threadsdev.com

Josh, personal question for on the chat programs. Which of the listed chat programs would you best recommend for incorporating into UBBThreads?

I ask you personally on this because I've read many posts by you and I'm amazed at the wealth of knowledge you have under your belt.

Now, on to a host that might not shut you down for a chat room. This is the one I use, they offer a very large set of options, including gigs of bandwidth at a very reasonable cost.

Yeah, JPilot and RaiderSoft Chat both have really great mods that integrate perfectly into threads. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

The chatroom is integrated into the message board, uses the same usernames etc....

I have an example of JPilot integrated at www.measurection.com - click chatroom at the top - you need to login as user: 'testing' password: 'testing' to try it. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />
