I just thought I'd check with the Threads Guru's before I did it.
I need to create a testing area for my forums on the same server. Does anyone have problems, say, running a differnetly named db and when finished testing then just upload the changed files to the existing forum?
I could easily run one for testing on another server but would like to make certain it was running on EXACTLY the same configuration as the 'live' one.
Yeah, that's no problem. The actual threads scripts are not databas specific. So play with and customize your files in a test directory, then move them to your live site.
The only files you shouldn't udpdate are config.inc.php and main.inc.php as those contain the settings of Paths, URLs and database access info. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />
Thanks Josh - just as I thought. I just wanted to double check as I remember some VERY old version problems on this. . .
It will be good to test updates and hacks prior to making them live . . eh Rick! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />
The issue, which I think was corrected is the cookie prefix.
All the cookies will be prefixed with w3t_ So running 2 boards on teh same server, your cookies can get confused - when you setup your test site... set the cookie prefix to something else (like 'test_') then the cookies will be different from one install to another. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />
I have enough problems with cookies. . . don't want to make it worse!
Its set in the config is it not? However, I am also getting ready photopost to add to the forum. I wanted to run the cookies with this too. Have you any tips on getting them to run on both easily?
I'd also like to extend their life too. . . I think they are set at 30 days as default? I'd like to make them much longer.
Earlier versions of photopost didn't recognize the cookies if you were using a custom prefix. I think the latest version does.
Usually any quirks that users might have being recognized going between photopost and threads can be fixed by them re-logging in and checking the "remember me" box.
You can configure the expiration time of cookies (in seconds) in the config file. Cookie prefix is there too. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />
Sweet! Nice one Josh. . . It will be interesting to see how the photopost install goes! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" />
Am creating a test area for that too so I can debug and improve that too offline.
Looks like a busy week or so coming up. . . <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />
