I haven't turned on Threads for my community yet.
Today, I had a troll visit our site, while I was away.
They posted 20 posts, all with nasty words s p e l l e d out like that, so it wouldn't be caught in the filter.
In Classic, I first went to the CP to disable him. (He was still active)
Then, I went to a setting in Classic, called "Users last posts". Cool! There they all are, and I can click on each one, note the IP address next to it, and move them to the mod board.
Then, to be safe, I did a search on the users IP, and sure enough, found someone else registered with that same IP address, and disabled him.

Cleanup done, and investigation complete!!

So, then... I decided to try to redo this, in Threads, as sort of a drill.
What would I do?

Find the offending post, get the user name, and click on his name and "ban user"?"

OK, then, I need to find all of his posts. There is no way to do this in the CP, right? Hit the back button, and under his profile, it says, "Show all users posts." Woopsie! No IP addresses next to the post. Why not? I need those! Seems like the data base would have that info available, and I'm really missing it at this point! It's great to know their patterns. Are they doing this all from one computer, or is a group of kids wreaking havoc with one username? Is this an IP that I am familiar with? Has he tried to get on, before?

So, one by one, I click on all of his posts, and move them to the mod board. Pant, pant...

OK, so I'm all done with that, in theory, anyhow...

Then, I want to know if that IP address has anybody else posting from it, or registered from it.

I go to the cp show/edit users, right? Then what? I tried one thing, but the search page just stalled... I tried to be patient, but after 10 minutes, I gave up.

I'd also like to know the IP of all my banned users, to see if this guy has been banned before. I can't find an option for that, either. Can someone help? The only place I can find a list of "banned members" is in the unban list. There is no info on them, at all? No IP address? No post history? Shouldn't banned members be a group, somehow?

I really feel that listing IP numbers next to the posts on "view all posts" is extremely handy, and frankly, I don't know how you guys do any investigating, without it.

Jen

Yeah, the IP addresses appear below the subject of the post. Between you and me an IP ban isn't very practical as it's waay to easy for someone to get a different IP simply by power cycling their cable or DSL modem - or using AOL - then they have a new IP address on every page due to proxy servers.

So no - it doesn't list them on the search page - they are listed under the posts.

If you check out the "unban" list in admin, that will show usernames and hostnames (IPs) that are banned. Not sure if a classic import carries over any bans or not.

6.5 will have a mass move - but if they are bogus posts you can use the delete threads option or mass delete all that user's posts.

Again you're comparing to Classic - which, as I said is a different product. Apples/Oranges. They are both fruit, but different. So this is the wrong place for that. Make sure you post any suggestions that you want considered for UBB.Threads in the Feature Request forum here. (Like your request for IP numbers next to posts). That's the Only way they will ever track and consider them.

You'll also find that 6.5 will work Much more like this in the Admin control panel. Make sure you check out the 6.5 Changelog for the list of changes. Sounds like 2 of the new features will be welcomed by you.

x Banning and unbanning users can be done by directly working with a particular user or a set of users can be banned/unbanned by using the new user search interface.

x New Mass Moval tool. Allows admins to move posts that match certain criteria from any number of forums to a target forum in one step. Options of leaving the original intact, closing it, marking it as moved or deleting it.

Hi Josh,
I'll post my wishes to the Threads suggestions.
As a newbie to Threads, I wanted to make sure it wasn't a feature I had missed.
I totally agree with you about the IP address bannings. I am pretty well versed in that area. I work with IP addies often, trying to help out our local Coast Guard and Police. I realize that people can change IPs. But, if you study them all on one page, often, you can learn a bit about their history and posting styles. Just recently, I was able to work with a police unit, and we successfully tracked a user who was using a college campus to post his follies. They caught him! I rarely ban by IP and only when it is static. Out of 5 years of running a bb, I have only felt the need to include less than 5 static IPs.
Yes, the import carried over the bans of users and IP.
Although it is probably normal to "compare" Classic to Threads after using it for so long, my reason for posting this question is this: I was hoping that Threads had some of these abilities, as they seem pretty basic, and I was hoping to find that I just hadn't found out how, yet.
If it's not there, it's good to know that I can stop searching for that button.
What I am talking about, however, is not about banning, but the need to Search for IP addresses.
I can't seem to get an IP search on the CP to work. I am hoping that I'm doing something wrong, and I'd like to know how.
Everything I do, seems to take ages, and when it does come up, it seems to be a list of all members, rather than isolated IP addresses.
When you search for an IP from "edit users" it doesn't return any results. In other words, when you know there's a post or person using an IP, and you search for that IP, you don't get a search result at all. Same search for UserName returns User Name, but search for a known IP returns nothing. That doesn't seem right, and it leads me to believe, or hope, that I am doing something wrong.
That's why I posted here in the "How do I?" area.
I also would like to know where the "delete for all users posts" is? That one I thought I had seen, but could not find it again. Where is it located?
I'll go study the "changelog", although most of it is a little over my head!
