I've got a working installation (www.barbarasher.com/ubb) which is 5.45c

I've seen some posts in here regarding upgrading from a 5.x version, but they mention backing up your database.

My version doesnt have a database ... everything is stored in text files. Will i be able to upgrade this to the latest threads version? I really need to move away from the old version. Its just way too slow/buggy since there are tens of thousands of text files from all the various posts on the bulletin board.

Do i just need to renew my member license to upgrade to the latest version?

thanks

it seems i cant do this with the trial version since the ubbimport files dont seem to be included with the trial version. I wanted to try importing everything before i actually pay for the new version. If it doesnt import correctly i wont be using it.

The trial version is only meant to test new installation on the server.

The import is non-destructive, and should work just fine from 5.45c. There is no need to backup anything.

If the import does not go quite correctly, then we can always look into why and help you through the process via a support ticket.

I would have felt happier knowing ahead of time that i can import everything cleanly. Installation i expect to go pretty quickly since i installed the 5.45c version myself as well. But if it installs in 10 minutes and then takes 10 hours to fix the import function, its not exactly going to make me happy <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

thanks

You have about 90,000 posts, and about 6,500 members... your import should take about an hour, though probably less.

i'm taking over a 5.45c board. i just purchased threads 6.5. i went to the ubb downloads page for the importer zip file. i found one that says it's for 6.3 only. the 6.5 admin docs says it only supports imports from 6.7.x classic. so can i use the 6.3 importer script for my situation?

thanks.

i'd like to add that the owner of the forum gave me access to the data directory and members directory on his server via ftp. but perusing thru this board it seems as tho i need access to maybe the cgi dictectory. could someone tell me exactly which directories i should have access to to transfer the forum to my server and upgrade it to threads 6.5? thanks..

thanks for the response. i should clarify that the forum is currently running classic 5.45c and i want to move it to my hosting provider running 6.5 threads.

looking thru some of the posts here, it seems as tho i need UltBB.setup, Styles.file, forums.cgi and mods.file but i'm not sure where these files are located since i don't have full access to the current server. i would like to tell the current owner exactly where these files are so he can give me access to them.

thanks for the link to joshua's site...i may need his services if my situation is more complicated than i originally anticipated.

The current method for transferring content from a UBB.classic board to a UBB.threads board can be found in the Admin Guide.

Basically, you will need to upgrade your UBB.classic board to 6.7.2 first. (This is actually a 2-step process: first upgrade to 5.47e, then to 6.7.2.) Then use the Import/Export feature to export the data (members, categories, forums, and topics/posts). Copy those data files to the /import directory of your UBB.threads installation. Then place a copy of the UBB.classic YAML file there. (YAML page). Then run the Import Data feature in UBB.threads. That will do it.

If you cannot get the UBB.classic 5.47e files, put in a support ticket and we can provide them.
