Hi I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post in so I appologise if its not but here we go.

I'm an admin on a ubb.threads forum and were having a few problems with attachments and images (and also the admin log for that matter).

The foum was moved to a new server last year and ever since then users have been unable to upload attachments and images. There is also an error when a mod or admin makes a change to the board and it tries the write this to the admin.log file.

When you go into the admin interface on the forum all the relevant fields are filled in but when you click on the test directory link it comes back with 'directory exists but is not writeable'

Now I assume this is because when the software was moved to the new server the correct permissions weren't setup on the directories. I've tried looking at the relevant faq's and they seem to suggest a unix permission of 777 for the attachments folder however when I try and set this it reverts back to 666.

Anyone got any ideas as I'm a bit new to this and am now stuck. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Its ubb.threads 6.2.3 were using.

Thanks for the reply, I suspected that may be the case.

What should the permissions be set to for the following directories:

ubbthreads/images
ubbthreads/attachments
ubbthreads/admin <--- for the admin.log file

Ok just read through the installation guides and found that the permissions should be 777 for all the folders I listed, but on our server they are currently 666 so I'll work on rectifying this.

Another problem is the e-mail notifications to PM's don't work either since the move. Is there a file somewhere with the settings for the e-mailing as I can't find it in the admin interface?

email settings are usually in php.ini, which are often out of the reach of the average user. normally the server admin has to check and correct them.

Got the server admin to set the permissions as per the installation guide and most of the functions are working now.

There are three options still not working.

1. Attachments don't work (but I'm sure this is because the temp_dir isn't set correctly in php.ini
2. E-mails not working (again i think php.ini needs looking at and I have asked the hosting co. to send me a copy of it)
3. The 'become this user option doesn't work.

With regard to problem 3, I notice it says your cookie path has to be absolute eg. / but ours is blank at the moment. If I set the cookie path to / is this likely to cause any problems? The reason I ask is if the forum goes down the only person that can get it back up is not contactable at the moment! <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Are you receiving all the other emails besides the email notifications for PMs?

Setting the cookiepath to "/" might end up logging you out and could potentially cause a cookie conflict. It shouldn't but it could. If you change it and it logs you out and you're unable to log back in then you'll want to close your browser and manually delete the cookies from your website. Like I said, this shouldn't happen but I can't guarantee that it won't.

Were not receiving any e-mails, PM notifications, thread replies, subscribed forum messages or anything, none of them work this is why I suspected the php.ini file after someone above said this is where the e-mail settings are.

As for the cookies if this conflict occurs do I need to delete cookies from the web server or will they need to be deleted on all members client PC's? If they need to be deleted from the web server I may risk it but with over 5000 members I don't want them all to have to start messing with cookies, I'd rather live with out that feature lol <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Normally changing the path to / from empty will just mean that users will need to login again. Nothing you can do on the server side on this to clear out the cookies. To test, if you can make a backup copy of your config.inc.php file then you can set the cookiepath variable to / and see what happens. Try going to your forums and logging in. If it ends up causing problems then you can just copy your backup to the original to switch back quickly.
