Is there any way of managing subscription to a private forum separately from membership of the whole site? I am setting up a forum for private discussion between a group and would like to automate the subscription process in the same way as ubbthreads automates subscription for the site as a whole.

I want to keep one forum available for everyone to see. Ideally I would like all visitors (whether or not subscribed) to be able to see that the private forum exists but not to allow them to see posts until subscribed (and I can verify their entitlement to access). Is this possible?

You mean like Paid Access?

There is user group access control through PayPal subscriptions using the myPaymentPal addon.

That grants access automatically after the user has paid the subscription fee.

No thanks. It's not for a subscription. I just need to restrict access so that one forum is restricted to a particular group. Obviously I can do that by setting the access permissions for that particular forum, but ideally I would like everyone to see that the forum exists (just not be able to read it or post to it). Also when members are signing up it would be good to allow automatic access to the main forum, but have to have approval by admin of the private forum.

It would be possible - but it would require custom scripting - I have something similar, whereby people can join a group via their 'My Home' - there is no reason, why this could not be subject to approval, in the same way as display name changes can be subject to approval.

But currently I do not know of a mod or hack that is available to do this.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I guess I'll leave things as they are for now. I'll just have to try and remember to add subscribers to the right group when they sign up or rely on them emailing me a request to join.

I am interested in the same sort of idea that I think James is posting about.

I think this relates to adding another access permission---something like "read forum list only" or similiar.

Greg, can you explain your "dummy" forum a bit more, I don't quite understand. I looked over your forums, but it looked like I could see all the forums with activity going on.

For more specifics on what I want to do:

I have a site with Paid and Public forums. I'd like all visitors to be able to see the full forum list, but not be able to enter the Paid Forums until they are a member of the Paid Forums group. URL for my site is www.pitracer.com and as a guest you will see 5 of the 19 forums. Again, I'd like guests to see the list of all 19 forums, just not be able to get into them until they are a Paid Member.
