Hi

Just received the following email from my Host:-

It has come to our attention that the site at
cgi.dannybaker.force9.co.uk is
using in excess of its bandwidth limits, the account allows the transfer of 250MB per day from the site, whereas it is currently using the following amounts:-

Date Transfer in MB Address

1-6-2004 292.99 cgi.dannybaker.force9.co.uk
2-6-2004 483.69 cgi.dannybaker.force9.co.uk
3-6-2004 423.87 cgi.dannybaker.force9.co.uk
4-6-2004 499.42 cgi.dannybaker.force9.co.uk
5-6-2004 571.36 cgi.dannybaker.force9.co.uk
6-6-2004 283.89 cgi.dannybaker.force9.co.uk
7-6-2004 411.00 cgi.dannybaker.force9.co.uk
8-6-2004 463.07 cgi.dannybaker.force9.co.uk
9-6-2004 560.97 cgi.dannybaker.force9.co.uk
10-6-2004 618.75 cgi.dannybaker.force9.co.uk

Please ensure you do whatever is possible to reduce this, for example by removing large files, and/or ones that are frequently accessed. We will check this again in 48 hours - if the site is still exceeding bandwidth then, we may need to temporarily archive it until you can confirm you will bring down the bandwidth in use.

Obviously I should hunt for a new Host asap but in the short-term exactly what can I do to urgently reduce bandwidth used. For example:-

1 - Turn off Private Messages
2 - Remove the ability to add attachments
3 - Remove the Who's Online Feature

I'm reluctant to do any of these? <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Anything else? <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />
HELP!

Not sure any of that will help with bandwidth - prohibiting the files will. You might want to close the forums for a couple of days until you can move. 250 MB per day is not much, probably very difficult to run anything but a static website in that alotment. Particularly if you have a lot of members.

It will take a lot longer than a few days to organise a new Host and move.

Is there really nothing I can do that would help - even partially?
I'm really reluctant to close the Board. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" /> <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I Strongly advise you to upgrade, 6.2.1 is old and there have been many enhancements made since then. Also I suggest you edit the template for your search if you do not upgrade, to stop people from searching all forums at once. A simple code mod can limit it to members only. You can do this with WOL also, or make the summary Admins only, to reduce it more. I've doen this for several of my clients in the same situation.

JC Many thansk for your informative reply, much appreciated.

I'm already strongly considering upgrading when I move Hosts but in the meantime (due to my limited expertise and lack of fund) it's not really an option.

I suggest you edit the template for your search, to stop people from searching all forums at once. A simple code mod can limit it to members only.

Exactly how do I do this or find out about this please?

You can do this with WOL also

or make the summary Admins only, to reduce it more.
Please explain more.

Cheers

That will reduce MySQL load - but bandwidth will be based simply on how many pages are viewed. The reduce bandwidth he needs to reduce the number of pages being viewed - not speed things up. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
