I'm sorry for posting this if there is already data out there regarding this topic.

I vaguely remember seeing something about version 6 of ubbthreads being the last full version release before a totally new version of UBB is released.

I've looked over your site and cannot find where I saw this before.

The reason I'm asking is I'm considering doing a few things to our site that will more integrate the board to our site. I don't want to do this just yet if the ubb is going to drastically change on the next version upgrade.

Though I understand modding the board changes support stuff and any upgrades that occur I have to figure out the fixes on with my modification, but for some reason I have it in my head that the next full release will be totally different where the perl and php boards are merged into one...

am i getting old and remembering things i shouldn't???

any help would be appreciated...

Michael

The way it's been explained to date is that 6.5.1 is the last version of UBB Threads ever (unless some major problem forces a 6.5.2 etc). Then Threads and Classic will be replaced by a new mystery product sometime this spring.
That's the way I understand it anyway.

hey cool, thanks for helping me with my senior moment...

any word infopop on updated release dates for this board??? I know we're at spring 2005, but since we're post groundhog day 2005 I thought I'd ask. Is it still on for spring, or is it looking like a summer thing at this point???

We're sticking by the Spring date for now. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Will infopop answer any questions about included features in the new product?

Is the post tracking in the new product going to be based on some other principle than in 6.51 ?

New post tracking is TBD, and hasn't been coded yet, actually. It will likely be one of the last things to go in.

It's likely to be a combination of the Classic and Threads methods - meaning that last visit timing is done completely client side via a cookie, though we'll keep track of individual thread & forum reads for the duration of your session.

The exact methods, techniques, and behavior of the feature are still subject to change.

(Full, database-level post tracking will not be making a comeback.)

Hmm.....wasn't this the one that actually and reliably worked? This can not be said for the version that is used in 6.5 or 6.51.
What methods do other boards use?

I was refering to the "full post tracking" feature in particular, actually - the one that tells you how many posts are new since your last visit to a topic when you look at postlist.

It's simply too hard on the database. Our goal with the new product is to take as much work away from the database as possible.

In Classic, there is no tracking at all, as you'd know it. Every time you visit the board, a cookie is set with the current timestamp, and the previous value of that timestamp is remembered as a session cookie. That cookie is then used to light up the bulbs and folders when there's content newer than the date present. There's no tracking of individual threads, no remembering where you left off and taking you there, etc.

It's really rather inconvenient. We also don't think it would fly in the new product either, as it takes away too many features that people really find useful.

The concept I outlined above is a good middle ground. It still makes topic-level new post tracking possible, without thrashing the database.

We might make it a little smarter and make it all per-forum instead of board-wide, like Classic. In that case, we would still need to store last read dates in the database, but a once-per-forum check once every session really woudln't be so bad.

See? This is why I said it's TBD. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Have any easy to answer questions, mabye? Hehe....

The post tracking in UBB.Threads was always one of the best features. Until the recent 6.5 tracking bugs, which only affected (in my experience) a small number of sites (with large numbers of forums) UBB.Threads was unmatched in it's post tracking. The other products, UBB.Classic, VB, Invision etc.... I've always had trouble figuring out what I haven't read.

Knock on wood, of all my clients with 6.5 upgrades, only 1 really had issue with the post tracking cookie bugs. I haven't done any 6.5.1 upgrades yet, as I've advised clients to sit tight and see the reports people make.
Although I'll echo that the larger UBB.Threads sites kill the server with the full post tracking on, but the vast majority of smaller sites could handle it.
