I give up <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I just spent 20 minutes downloading and printing the UBB Admin guide.

I need to know how to log in to the control panel.

The Admin guide, page 3 says:

"Enter your UBB software control panel."

Not too helpful <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Hi Jeff!

To enter the UBB control panel, point to the cp.cgi script. Simply replace the "ultimatebb.cgi?..." in your browser bar with "cp.cgi" and that should do the trick!

Hope that helps!

There we go guys! Yet ANOTHER first-time customer who (originally) like myself had NO idea whatsoever how to activate the Control Panel. I also told you that it is NOT mentioned anywhere clearly on your documentation or your site.

As I said in my...

PREVIOUS POST:
"Where's the Control Panel to open on Apple Mac?"

...Make this point BIG, BRASH & BOLD on the "Downloads" section of your site.

Your customers have spoken.

To make this topic even more simple...

Once you've installed the UBB 6.21 software to your website's server, open up your INTERNET EXPLORER browser and type in your .com address (or equivalent).

At the end of the .com, you need to type in one of the following (depending) which way you've set it up.

...com/cgi-bin/forum/cp.cgi
OR
...com/cgi-bin/ubb/cp.cgi

The control panel will come up on Explorer just like a Website... but with loads of pop-up / drop-down menus to play with.

Eh voila... many hours wasted / enjoyed tweaking your Forum.

You have been heard! I will add some tips about that in the next document update. We've avoided getting specific about that in the docs thus far, because every person's setup is different, resulting in a slightly different URL for the cp.

But I see from what you've noted that there might be some ways to provide clarity on that!

Thanks for letting us know about that source of frustration. Consider it done.

Thanks Rosemary. You're a star!

Moral of the story... always look at your product from the lowest common denominator's point of view... i.e. Perl dummies like myself. S-P-E-L-L---IT---O-U-T.

Nice to be heard from someone at the top too.

I wish they would stop pushing that piece of trash!
We Mac users like to use something better...LOL Like Netscape, the original one! 4.7.9...the best!

BTW, I had no trouble finding the control panel, but until the Netscape bugs are fixed, my $199. stays in my pocket.

Maybe in the documentation you could use a generic example such as http://www.yourdomain.com/cgidirectory/cp.cgi
where cgidirecrory is where you uploaded the cgi files

Maclady, we are definitely trying hard to make our products easier for Mac/Netscape folks---in fact we have people in-house who are consistently "fighting the good fight" for Netscape users. Depending on the nature of the issue, though, it can be tough to resolve sometimes. I assume the bugs you're talking about have been specifically identified to the dev team in other threads?

Regarding the control panel location, here is a quote from the current instructions:
IMPORTANT INFORMATION---

The URL for your new UBBâ„¢ community is:

http://www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi .

The URL to access your UBBâ„¢ control panel is:

yourdomain.com is a real domain. You might want to use a guaranteed fake domain, like example.com.

I too had no problems finding my Control Panel. The installation instructions were pretty clear. And the test board was only the second CGI script I've ever uploaded/worked with.

For self-confessed "Perl dummies" like Irish Racer perhaps the thing to do would be to include a brief .txt file in the install .zip (the Help folder should be a good place) describing in general how we as webmasters work with CGI scripts. Just a quick thing about "CGI scripts live in the cgi-bin directory and you can call them by linking to them or typing in the address..."

In fact, that would be a decent "selling point". "Never worked with CGI scripts? That's OK. Our instructions include a simple overview that will get you up and running in no time."

Dave_L, great thought. I'll change it in the next doc revision.

Lego, also good idea! Consider that on the "to do" list. There are lots of folks out there (like me a couple of years ago) who think cgi scripts are voodoo. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Well, this was the first script I ever tried and it worked in 30 seconds.
A lot has to do your UNIX server being configured correctly.

And so far, I have not FOUND any Netscape 4 bugs, which means it has the widest range of compatibility possible. It's just that someone above said they thought it had one, but if so, I can not find it after a week of looking.

I am one of those designers who thinks that it's ridiculous to code for one version of one browser, it would only make ME look bad.
As far as p ersonal use, NN 4.7.9 works best.
Unbeknownst to many, NN 4.x is NOT an older version of NN 6, as NN 6 is not the same thing as the neat, sweet, petite, and uncrashable (on my system anyhow) 4.7.9.
Soon NN 6 will be 40% market again due to AOL. To me it's just like IE so that just means I will now only have to check on ONE other browser......if I can make a page work in an older IE (4.5) or AOL 5 for Mac, then it works everywhere.

So, my only complaint so far is that for $199. there should be unlimited use seeing as there are similar ones out there for free. I do repeat, so easy to install it nearly installs itself.
One thing, the FETCH FTP auotdetects but for PERL you MUST set it to text just to be sure.
