How can I make this open up in a new window? Can I use the "target" command in this case?

Yep - the target command should work. . .but make sure HTML is on. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> (a mistake I make allllll the time)

Though activating HTML is something we HIGHLY recommend AGAINST doing.

I'd rather hack it in to the code than activate HTML.

You might want to check with www.ubbdev.com and see if they can give you any advice.

Do you mean the "HTML Allowed?" setting under Forum Settings? This setting only applies to a particular forum though, is there another one that encompasses the entire board?

I think that's what Kate was referring to; there is no global enable HTML setting.

Graeme, can you please let me know why you don't think enabling HTML is a good idea?

At the moment I have it turned on for all my forums but I'm willing to turn it off in a flash if I should. Is it a safety issue?

Conrad do you just want that link on the UBB â„¢ to open in a new window? If so it's fairly easy.

Just open the public_common.pl template and look for: my $ContactLine = qq!<a href="$contact_url">$vars_wordlets{contact_us}</a> &#0124; <a href="$vars_display{HomePageURL}" target="newpage">

Add the part in bold. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Yes, it's a safety issue. For example, with imaginative use of HTML, people can sneak code into posts that obtains privileged information. Infopop keeps adding new "filters" to prevent this, but it's likely there are as yet undiscovered exploits, so turning off HTML is the safest approach.

Thanks for the info, I have now removed the use of html in all of my forums.

One more question: can "sneaky code" that could have been included before I switched off html still affect my site?

Unfortunately, yes.

You could try running a search on all forums for embed, script, onClick, onOpen and so on to see if anything comes up. (I never tried this so I'm not sure if the search even indexes these or not.)

Steve, sorry to bother you, but how exactly do I search for those commands. Honestly I don't even know what to type in.

Steve, forgot to ask, is the "sneaky html" only active when people open old threads where they could have been placed? Or could the board still be affected in new threads where the html is already switched off?

Just type in one of those terms, one at a time, and click search. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Yes, all these expliots require someone to look at the thread....most of them only steal the cookies of the user that looked at the thread.

However, I believe the UBB search function only looks at the first part of a post (300 characters?). To search all the text, you would have to search the files directly on the server.
