Why has the legend for the icons been removed? I would like to see it added back.

Personally, I disagree. I always thought it was wasted space. If your icons are so confusing (or your users are so dumb) that you need a legend to explain that "this icon means new posts, this icon means no new posts," you should probably think about getting new icons (or users ;)). Because if your icons are well-designed, people aren't going to need someone to explain which one means what.

I don't really agree, there are a couple of icons that can be missleading with some software, mainly:
Sticky
New Posts in Hot Topic (or in our case, a giant flame to the right of the thread)
Old Posts in Hot Topic (or in our case, a giant flame to the right of the thread)

With absolutely no legend, new users (or visitors) won't know what to think

pssst, titles in the mouseovers What's that big flame thing? Hover...... ohhhh that's what it is.

All of them don't have them but that'll get fixed. I would think by now most everyone knows to hover over an image. A legend is useful the first time that you need to know, but when you've been visiting a site for a year, it's kinda wasted space
