Hi!

We have a quite active topic with 613 replies = 18 pages. Here is the direct link: http://www.rapidforum.at/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=4&t=001281

Is there any maximum amount of replies/pages that we should take action and close the topic?

Dani

It all depends on how powerful your server is, but it is getting to the point where we recommend you close.

It isn't the number of pages as much as the number of replies. I think CC usually ballparks at about 500.

I've seen longer threads, but I've also seen plenty of corrupt ones.

So yeah, start a new thread and close the old one..

I was curious to know what subject is the cause of such a long thread...so I popped the first post into Babelfish, and the translation is hilarious.

Does it have something to do with a pop concert, roses, and a proposal?

Thanks for your reply. We closed the topic and opened a new one.

What is CC?

A Fan bought *all* tickets for a concert of a pop-diva in Belgrad. He was the only fan attending the concert (3000 seats stayed empty). The pop-diva first refused to go on stage, but the manager insisted, so she perfomed her concert just for this one guy. The unknown, 30 year old fan gave her 101 roses, a flight-ticket to Genf (Switzerland) and proposed to her. She took the roses, but if she accepted his proposal is unknown.

That´s the story. What started was a conversation between a few members of the board regarding music, favorite movies, etc. - Small-Talk :-). The messageboard is primarly about the Vienna Soccer Club SK RAPID WIEN, but as the season ended one week ago (until March) they are taking the opportunity to discuss something else and to get to know each other better. Well, that´s what the SMALL-TALK-Forum is about

We are running the ubb on our own dedicated server.

Here are some details: http://www.rapidforum.at/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=8&t=000008

Dani, thanks for explaining the full story...obviously the essence was lost in translation! Pretty funny.

Over 500 replies are a risk for corruption!

I never knew this! Is there some sort of secret admin handbook that I missed?

I am always surprised to find new ways that my cache gets reset causing bandwidth problems. There have been many other tidbits of information that would be useful to know before I found out the hard way.

How about a resource by Infopop that puts little-known facts that all Admins need to know in one place. The forums aren't good enough for this. The information is too diluted.

We need a document that puts key information in one place. Please consider it.

There's no secret handbook ...the accumulated life experiences of the UBB experts who hang out here are really useful, but I understand that it would be cool to have something like "the insider's guide to UBB".

It's a bit tough to put down guidelines for the type of thing you're dealing with, because there are so many variables involved---the type and capacity of your server, the level of expertise of the administrator/sysadmin, the version of UBB that's running, whether the board has been customized/hacked, etc. However, I'll bet we could come up with an interesting list of "dos and don'ts".

Would you like to kick off the project by spilling out some of the stuff you wish you had known up front?

I guess I'll start with the ones here first.

- Threads with over 500 posts are at risk for corruption.

- I never know what Control Panel functions will reset my cache.

Let's see...what else...

- I've gotten multiple cache directories since upgrading the last few times. I didn't know this was a bad thing until I stumbled on a thread here.

- Some files are no longer needed after upgrading but there are no instructions that say these files can be deleted. Again, I stumbled on a thread here.

Nothing else off the top of my head. I'm sure others can think of more.

threads with over 500 replies are commonplace on my board.. it's just a thing my members do all the time.. start topics like "ask whoever anything" and they just go on forever.. sometimes over a thousand replies.. i don't close them cuz there's never been a problem

also.. can somebody tell me about that multiple cache directory thing? cuz i noticed i have two cache directories.. that's bad?

More facts for admins:

- Public Display Names of deleted members get removed when member stat files are rebuilt. Otherwise they are off-limits to users.

- Actual usernames of deleted members are forever off-limits for use.

Maybe a new thread could be started for this. The subject of this thread really makes these useful facts too hidden...

Huh??

By the way, I renamed the thread to reflect what is being discussed right now.
