OMG!!!! I just got my mid month stats on bandwidth!!!!

I used to run VBB, and used about 10-13GB for a total month of traffic.

I changed to UBB and now its gone upto 15GB mid month, with no extra traffic comming in!!!

Is this normal or is something really DUFF?

This is what me Site Stats say for a typical day!

Site Stats:
Day13 :Hits 153823 9.53%, Files 47487 9.19%, Cached 63359 8.87%, Pageviews 12170 8.70%, Sessions 1363 7.57%, KB Sent 983815

UBB stats:
Page views this month (11/2001): 325290, 186263 (57.26%) from the UBB Accelerator

Why is my bandwidth usage so high??

I like UBB and would like to stay with it.
How can I cut down the bandwidth.

hmmmm.. a few things can be done.

  • decrease # of threads per page in the forum display
  • decrease # of replies/posts per page in the threads
  • turn off "search all forums" to just search one forum at a time
  • you could replace the php compression with a perl module that compresses all pages, not just those cached.

Which brings us to this... do you have a url to your ubbaccel_test.php file? You may not even have compression turned on for your site.

Hi,

I've done all that apart from the below:

Could you tell me more about "you could replace the php compression with a perl module that compresses all pages, not just those cached."

Thanks

this is what is not helping..

Your PHP version is 4.04: OK - old, but it should work
Your PHP version has zlib: Yes, but your PHP version is too old to use zlib properly

that, that could be causing the MASSIVE difference in bandwidth?

This might be an alternative:
https://www.ubbdev.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=30&t=000049&p=

It might be easier, though, to see if you can upgrade the server to PHP 4.05 or higher, so that PHP/zlib can be used.

but does that amount of bandwidth look correct for the stats???

Does UBB really need that much?

I can't help with analyzing the bandwidth stats.

I wouldn't think there would be that much difference in bandwidth between the different scripts, although there could be a significant difference in server resource utilization (CPU, memory, disk I/O, etc.).

Is it possible you're getting hit by web spiders? Changing your forums to members-only could help.

Hmmm ... do you have a statistics utility on the server that can break down usage by page, referrer, etc.?

What you want to see exactly?

You might check to see whether the bandwidth is being generated by a single user, or a small group of users. Also, whether a few pages are accounting for a large percentage of the bandwidth.

tenshu, (sorry for the late reply) do you allow html and or images in your posts, and signature lines? If so this will increase load time. It shouldn't increase bandwidth unless you allow them to upload them to your server (or you do).

Bandwidth is the total of:

1) html code
2) text
3) images
4) scripts, etc..

This added up per page per time loaded is the total cause of any and all bandwidth.

All images in sigs are on other space, not on mine.

if I remove the sigs option anyhow do you think that will help?

I dont have any forums that allow html.

Thanks

Dunno if this will help: 1500 members, 320,000 page views, 2.1M files, 16Gb data. This is with my php cache serving about 43-45% of all pages.

That was for a whole month (Oct) using the latest version (6.1.0.x).

I run server on my PC here so I can play with the UBB. Took me all of 10 mins to change PHP.

I actually think he wont upgrade because he likes the sound of getting $400NZ Dollars a month from my expected bandwidth use!!

Anyhow spoke to new hosting Co today, they will cover my bandwidth if I place their small banner advertising their services on my intro page of the UBB.

Old host can go and swim!!

Scwweeeeeeeet!!

PS: i'm upto 21GB now!!!!!!!!!!!!

What was the old infopop UBB using up a month, and what is the new system using?

he's complimenting Infopop on the UBB accelerator.

Like someone earlier in this thread said, prune some old posts, it reduces bandwidth dramatically (or so I've heard). Try deleting inactive accounts too.
