I notice that when you use the Private Message System it sends an e.mail to the person whom you are sending a message to, so why not just send them an email?

Users can elect not to receive emails when receiving PMs.

And maybe I don't want to give out my email address publicly.. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

The buddy list allows you to quickly send a PM. Otherwise, you need to find a post they made or know their member number, to send them a PM. If they're on your buddy list, you can PM them directly.
