My hosting company disabled my website for more than 24 hours as my site was using the resources of almost an entire T1 line - primarily (as I was told) due to the message board traffic. My site has grown quite large and is very busy, and I am of course considering moving it to a dedicated server vs. shared, but I need to know a few things:

(1) Is there any way to script the UBB so that members can be required to pay a nominal access fee for use of the board before they actually got their logon and password via email?

And if I can't do that....

(2) Is there any way to turn off the graphics completely to reduce the serving of images and thereby greatly reduce bandwidth usage?

If you are using 6.1.0 or later, you may want to try the UBB acellerator if your server supports PHP. As with the images, i think you can disable them. As with fees, no there isn't.

I just came from your site - it looks like you've got quite a community going there. Congratulations! How many registered members do you have? How many stored posts? You may want to consider upgrading to UBBThreads as well. It has a MySQL database that may alleviate some of your current server issues. We have about 1400 registered members, but I regularly go through and delete registrations for people that have made 0 to 1 post in less than 6 months, otherwise it would be over 2,000. I would say we have about 600 or so that visit the site at least weekly and post regularly.

Last night I pruned hundreds of threads from the more than 15 forums. One had more than 10,500 posts in hundreds of threads. Though the topics were interesting, most had to go! Since the board remains closed, I don't know how many threads it will show as still active.

Michael, I definitely want to institute a nominal fee structure to associate with usage of the board. Please advise on how to best proceed. I would like to have that feature instituted before I open the board back up towards the end of next week.

Lastly, I am interested in the UBB Threads. Looked at the tour... just trying to figure out how much of the annual fee I just paid would be applicable to the upgrade fee. Please advise or let me know where that information might be on the website.

Well it was mentioned that a fee for joining might be implemented. And the possibility of increased bandwidth costs also factor in.

To implement a fee structure, at least in UBB, you'll need to follow this procedure (to some extent):
-suspend everyone's posting privileges. Can't be done easily - best way is to write a short script to do it. Worst part of it all.
-enable registration moderation. This turns off posting privs by default.
-when people pay, you enable their posting privileges.

Yeah! Now there you go. Thank you everyone for helping me! I think my ultimate solution will be to upgrade to UBB Threads since community shows no signs of slowdown but probably will as soon as I post that they are going to have to start paying for the privilege.

There's currently a script available to move from UBBâ„¢ to UBBThreadsâ„¢, but the script from UBBâ„¢ to OpenTopicâ„¢ is not yet available.

Deb, your ISP is nuts. I looked at your site and there's no way your board is using up the bandwidth he says you are.

I average 25000 page views a day with 75 to 150 people on line at any time and am nowhere near my ISPs allocated limits and I am on a run-o-the-mill $25/month deal.

I don't think UBB Threads is the way to go. I would look at an alternative host.

Yeah, I wondered about that too Steve, especially since when on the first day he talked to me about it, there was mention about there being "movies and sound files" on my site! I don't HAVE any such things. So then he thought someone with an adult site had hacked into it and put the files in a hidden directory in the UBB area. So when I had him on the phone on Friday, suddenly he couldn't find the files that were mysteriously there the day or so before.

Seeing as how I am on a shared server, anything is possible. So I am going to be looking for another host. Anyone have ideas for a dependable company, Virtual Server, Unix based, reasonable fee?

for recommendations/advice on hosting companies. It's tough these days, when companies are going out of business left and right......

I am running 2 forums on UNIX on a virtual/shared server. The frenz forum in my sig has been running over 1.5 yrs on Earthlink. The GC one in my sig has only been running a few weeks on HostCentric (formerly Web2010 + some other companies they bought). I currently have no complaints about either, and am happy with both. The HostCentric tech support told me they have over 2000 UBBs running, which made me more confident about trying them out.

The only thing I don't like about the HostCentric site is that the statistics package they give you is MAJORLY lame and reminds me of the very basic raw log parsing of the mid-1990s. Earthlink gives you Urchin Reports, which are no LiveStats, but at least are graphic and have a few choices for reporting.

Deb, if for no other reason you can set groups in Ubbthreads and make them the paid and those that aren't can't enter. And can't see the forums for that matter so the paid are private <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
