My UBB board was taking up about 110 MB of space on my ISP's server...then all of a sudden it dropped to about 50 MB! I did not do anything (no pruning or archiving), so my question is...does the UBB Classic board do some kind of automatic maintenance that would have reduced the size of the board?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts...

Um, well... No - no automatic maintenance that would cut your board's size more than in half...

Are you experiencing any problems - e.g. errors about missing topic files, members can't login, etc??

The only thing the board does "automatically" per se, is to clear it's cache, and there's just no way I can even imagine 60 MB of cache files...

Kate, thanks for the quick reply. I did not think the UBB was doing anything automatically. My board seems to be working fine. No one has complained, and when I go there it functions correctly for me. Must be something my ISP is doing to explain the reduction...I will have to check with them. Thanks again.

Wonder if someone cleared your cache. That could drop your disc space significantly.

I was doing some clean up and removal of large directories on our unix web server and noticed that our ubb/cache-XXXXX/ folder is over 110 meg. Does this sound right?

considering that your board has as many messages as it has, and has been around as many years as it has, that is no surprise at all.

You could clear the cache via the control panel. That will make an immediate space savings. Pages that are not looked at will not regenerate in cache.

Thanks for the comment DD.

There are probably many pages that will never be viewed again. This is a great reason for clearing the cache.

I read some posts about performance problems if I clear the cache files. What problems should I be aware of?

You are likely to experience some slower page loads at first. But as the cache rebuilds that should go away.
