Hi,
I just closed my forum (which has about 300 active members at any one stage) so that I could make some changes to it. The whole forum seems as if it has now crashed. Each page (including the contol panel) takes many minutes to load, if they even load at all. I don't know what to do.

Hey,
I had to reboot the server to get things working again... is this to be expected when a busy forum is closed in this manner?
Also, I was wondering what the advantages are of UBB.threads as opposed to UBB.classic, and whether my forum should use 'threads' instead:
http://www.superiorpics.com/cgi-bin/ultimate/ultimatebb.cgi

Also, is it possible (easy) to migrate data from 'classic' to 'threads'?

Cheers

The first thing I would do is turn off Recent Visitors. That will help reduce some of the load on the server. In addition, I believe it is recommended that you have no more than 5000 topics in a forum.

Approximately how many pageviews per month are you getting? If you don't know, then you could give the current, and we could guesstimate.

Hi,
it says "Pageviews (06/2004): 2020837"
I don't know whether that statistic is page views today, month-to-date or what...

this month to date. I would like to add that I officially hate you, as I've never reached 25,000 in a month, let alone 2 million in 9 days <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> *not really hate, just would like to borrow some of your visitors*

one word; wow... roughly 224,537 per day, probably an average of 6,736,123 per month.

I hate to be downer, but my forums have crashed again. This is the second time it has happened in the past few days. All I tried to do was add another forum. I managed to do this successfully but then when I went to try and edit the "Short Forum Description" for it and then click "Submit Changes" it would never leave that screen. I then checked the forum itself (and the rest of the site) to see if could load any topics, but it appears that they are down. As this is becoming common for me (probably due to the number of users I have at one time) is there some way that I can improve things? I heard that this software can only handle one request at a time? Is there some way to let it handle multiple requests?

It is pretty bad when simply changing something in the control panel crashes my entire server (with 10+ different sites on it!) on a consistent basis. Please, I really need help here as this is only going to get much, much worse very soon.

Not that I know of; it simply isn't how the language was created to work. If you have a huge board you should contemplate the move to threads as it will handle multiple requests.

Chukee, go to your control panel.
Display Options -> General
Choose the Recent Visitors tab.
Uncheck the box next to Enable Recent Visitors.
Submit.

That will turn off the Recent Visitors function on your boards. That isn't the cureall, but that is a start.

I assume you are on a dedicated box and just hosting a few other sites.

approximately how much extra resources will that save? If it will only save a tiny bit then I would prefer to leave the Recent Vistors function because it is quite interesting.

Wow.

Two million pageviews in less than nine days.

For the record, the largest UBB.classic instances have been in the 3 million per month range.

chuckee, you have officially outgrown UBB.classic.

Turning off Recent Visitors will provide a good performance boost. You should also follow the other bits of advice that I gave in the topic Ron linked to - namely forcing a DaysPrune of all in all your forums. That will help increase cache hits, which will in turn help performance.

UBB.threads generally has all the features of UBB.classic. The next release, 6.5 (currently in public beta form), also includes a rebuilt control panel based on the UBB.classic one. (Due to 6.5 being a public beta, I would not advise moving to it - version 6.4 is just as functional, though the control panel isn't as pretty <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> . You can expect 6.5 final within the next month or so, though we have not set a date for it as of yet.)

Do keep in mind that UBB.threads is a completely different product. The front end user interface is simlar to, but not exactly like UBB.classic. Your users may not like it at first.

You should also consider the Eve platform... and take a good, long look at the Thrive service. However, for that level of traffic, you'd probably be looking at a dedicated server.

Threads isn't half bad, the thing I have against Eve is that you have to use infopop's hosting. I'm actually thinking about converting on eof my licenses for classic to threads.

RecentVisitors and daysprune will increase your preformance slightly, but once again it's drastically outgrown ubb.classic with just 9 days of pageviews...

Charles, thanks for that.
Question - what do you mean by 'forcing a DaysPrune'? and how do I do it?

Also, just a general question - if you delete/prune topics, does the total post count that is displayed for each individial user at the bottom of each of his/her posts reduce by the number of posts of his/hers that were just deleted/pruned?

Forcing DaysPrune means in your control panel, forum settings setting the Default Topic View (Days) on each of your forums to a value in there. That will ignore the user's preference and display the same topic list for every user, thereby caching 1 copy of the topic list which everyone will access rather than caching a copy for each DaysPrune value.

Pruing topics does not reduce a user's post count.
