I just upgraded from Apache 1.3 to 2.0, and I'm getting "500 Internal Server Error" when accessing my board. This doesn't happen every time - it seems a bit random. This also happens sometimes when accessing other CGI files on this server.

OK, First thing you should check is the apache error log to see what is being reported.

I checked the log and found several entries like the ones below. What does this mean?

[Mon Jun 21 08:19:09 2004] [error] (35)Resource temporarily unavailable: couldn't create child process: 35: ultimatebb.cgi
[Mon Jun 21 08:19:10 2004] [error] (35)Resource temporarily unavailable: couldn't create child process: 35: franchiusa.cgi
[Mon Jun 21 10:47:22 2004] [error] [client 66.49.44.58] Premature end of script headers: ultimatebb.cgi

BTW: franchiusa.cgi is a radius-based store locator based on zip code.

This appears to be an Apache problem, not a UBB problem...

A quick googling seems to indicate that this error is related to the number of possible children processes, and seems to occur quite a bit on the BSDs. I assume you're using Net/Open/FreeBSD?

I was googling around a bit, and it looks like that is caused by a process limit. The Apache server is trying to launch more processes than allowed by the system.

I found this pertaining to FreeBSD, but I'm guessing it's something similar for other operating system.

It looks like the Apache is culprit in this case, not the UBB.

*Edit* Guess great minds think alike, Charles beat me to the post <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Hi,

This is more for people who are wondering about why they are getting the "500 Internal Server Error".

On my linux box the cgi-bin is above the root directory etc....

The permissions for the file and the directory that the file is in need to be 755. You also need to make sure that you do not have any MSDOS carriage returns in the file.

Again this might sound like I didn't read the message... it for those that are searching the forum.
