We can see page views, on a monthly basis.. But i want more (of course)

I'm wondering if it is possible to know any more specific information about viewing habits..

Like - how much is 'search' used?

How often is the summary viewed?

How often is the recent visitors viewed?

I have banners and graphics that give me a bit of an idea of viewing habits (from the individual Forum perspective), but my boards seems pretty unusual in activity (cache 58%), and I am trying to optimize everything..

Thanks

Bob

I would be pleased with a cache percentage of 58%. For the type of stats you are looking for, you might want to consider either imbedding a unique image in the particular pages, or heading to UBBDev and request a hack for those functions to keep stats.

Your web server software, IIS or Apache, should be keeping track of all this for you. It's far, far more economical for the webserver to do this than try to hack redundant functionality into UBB.

I might try that Ron, (embedding an image), but I have found really fascinating things with various caches (I mean ISP, router, user's browser etc.. their cache can REALLY skew the numbers)..

David - IIS for me, and you're telling me there is a way I can find, as an example, how many times UBB search is invoked? Or counts on any of the things I mentioned? I do capture detailed logs, and a couple of time a week I analyze them - in addition a couple of time a week I do the real time monitor as well, but I have no idea where I'd find the Search, Summary, Recent Visitor usage counts?

When running with normal URLs, each URL is going to begin with "ultimatebb.php?ubb=" or "ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=", with whatever is immediately after the equal sign being the requested action. A simple count of the number of each type of action will show you how many people performed that action.

However, some actions are misleading. Things like registration are POST-based forms, so their requests won't be logged with the ubb= bit. Also, things like the search and Community Directory use further arguments in the URL to define exactly what was being done (for example, the difference between performing a search and looking at the results is part of the d= paramater).

In any case, the logs should reveal a decent picture of your traffic.

Thanks very much Charles - I (now) see that I can get exactly what I want from the log files .. I have no idea why I didn't think of using the log files in this way.. (Guess I wasn't actually thinking..)

Cheers,
Bob
