I am running ubb classic 6.7.1. I have spent 30 minutes searching these classic forums on this issue and I can't believe that there are not more posts complaining about this problem! Here is the deal. I have 150+ people signing up daily for my boards and I am guessing that 20%+ of them are not ever getting the password via email because of their isp's or spam filters! Add that up and I am losing 900+ people per month that wanted to participate on our boards and can't. I am sure they leave frustrated and say, "I'll never return to that site again!"

The number of emails and calls from these people desperate to post on our forums is overwhelming. I understand that I will not get access anymore to their passwords through the control panel. Fine. I can't email it to them because they won't get the email.

What are the options? This is what I am guessing.
1. Turn off the email password option during registration so they can choose their own. Is this what the majority of the other boards are doing? In a fairly high profile site will this cause more problems or solve all of them?
2. Have some sort of web log in using person's email address and something else so they can see password? I know - full of holes and how do we keep others from looking at people's passwords if they know their email address.

So what can we do? I hate turning 30+ people away each day frustrated! Please help. Sorry for sounding so dramatic.

The password is still plain text in the member file in the members directory via FTP.

I myself have a semi large board and I've yet to really experiance any real issue with this. Some filters block out "your password is" now adays; this is an issue with the ISP and not the software.

Your best bet is to tell them that if their ISP is blocking the registration/forgot password emails that you login to FTP and get the password and email it to their address; that way you can have a "request password" form which emails you (hopefully bypassing your spam blockers) and you do the hard work ... As #2 won't work from a security standpoint.

Thanks Gizmo for the quick response. The problem with the solution you suggest is that I really do have 30+ people per day not getting emails. The idea of ftp'ing for each one is daunting. Our boards are for people with boating questions or problems. Most of them have never used message boards before and are VERY low tech. It amazes me that many of them can even get on to the internet.

I am assuming that the people who go to your boards are techies who can understand what spam filters are. Please believe me, because of the differences of the demographics between our two sites, this is a much bigger problem for our users than in some other boards.

What do you think about our turning the email password option off? What problems will it create? Thanks in advance to the response.

Well turning the email password option will only result in a few things:
1. Your users can register any name at any time with any email; this results in a few sets of members:
1a. Members who reg every "likeness" of their name because they want to remain "unique" (i've seen it happen, had one user with about 30 accounts).
1b. Members will reg every "likeness" of other members in attempts to "bash" them.

2. If you ban someone's account it'll take 2 seconds to re-signup; as you have no email password routine they can just simply fill out the form and get access; be prepaired for:
2a. Name Bashing: where user register "[profanity]-[namewhobannedthem]" such as "F*** You Charlie Brown" for example.
2b. See 1a and 1b

You might want to make sure that you're using plain text email, BTW. It's less likely that some spam filters will mark plain text mails as spam in comparison to the HTML versions.

Out of curiosity, how many pageviews does your control panel report for this month so far? This isn't related to the email/spam filter issue.

Your board is VERY large, and is "breaking" the general performance rules - you have way too many members, and way too many topics in some of those forums... I'd expect your board to be crawling, not flying along like it is, especially considering you're not using the Accelerator...

Thanks Gizmo and Charles. Sorry for the belated reply. I have followed your advice and turned our emails to plain text. I really hope that will help. In a few days we should see with greatly reduced emails of people saying they are not getting their passwords. Again thanks.

As for your other questions Charles, we are running a unique environment. We do not have our ubb on just one server. We run 8-9 cgi machines, a large file server and database server with load balancing machines. Because of this, my pageviews on my control panel does not work. Is it time for us to upgrade to another ubb solution?

I'm curious about the network file system you're using - we generally forbid the use of standard NFS because of severe file locking problems that result in horrid instability. If you ARE using normal NFS, I'm about ready to bow down and kiss your feet, as you'd be the first production board to actually pull it off and NOT blow up.

If you're in a position where you need to load balance, you'd be far better off with UBB.threads or Eve. Also, the recently announced replcement product for both UBB.threads and UBB.classic would be a good candidate to load balance.

I don't get the offer very often to have someone kiss my feet. Maybe it is the chule' (portuguese). We are using standard NFS with file locking. Feel free to email me for more info on how we do it. I will take a look at the other products you mention. Thanks!
