My boards are 6.7.0
Each month I zip the entire CGI directory structure, and copy the file off the server - I've been watching the disk utilization grow for some time now - today at 300+ MB on the server - it zips down to about 80-120MB - but that also varies wildly month to month. ??
My questions - is it normal to be at 300+ MB on the server? (175,000 + Posts, VERY busy on a daily basis)
Anything I can / should be doing to keep disk under 'control'? ( mine is a dedicated server with over 20+Gb of disk, so I have A LOT of room to grow)
Compression ratio - are they consistent? I mean, when I zip down to a 120MB file, does that mean my disk was over 400MB?
I recall starting with the UBB reading 100 (or was it 150?) MB was all that would be needed?
No problems - it is all working very well, but I was wondering..
Bob

The Caching system in UBB.Classic is one large thing that can effect the size of your site on backup time (noncgi/cache-[8characters]/). The size of the cache will grow based on users activity on the site as every "view" of a page that hasn't been cached (for instance, if you clear your cache and click forum 1 and the first topic, that topic will be cached so that others can view it faster; when it's updated (responded to) the cache will be updated).
The size of the cache can really vary dependant on how popular a forum is as well as how often the cache is cleared; the cache (I believe) can get to the same size of your forum (forum size based off of the "forum" directories in your noncgi directory).

Deleting the cache - using the CP command I mean, dropped the disk usage by a bit, but I know I have quite a few old versions still 'there'.
Why are they there? (guessing some sort of upgrade left over?) My boards or server very seldom crash..
Any problem with a manual delete of them? (I guess I'm a neat nut.. no disk space issue really, but WTH)

not all of the files in the /cache directory are purged by "clear cache" as they aren't cached versions of pages <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
