hi all..

this is moved from the ubb.threads list. i didn't know that there are a few of them.. i didn't install it originally - i just moved it to the new machine.. but here is the post:

we just moved our server from one host to another. and the ubb doesn't work anymore. everything is on it's place. all the variables and paths are set up correctly and there are no errors but the users are not found. the Member directory is on it's place and permissions are correct...

whare should i look now? our users are getting a bit inpatient...

Did you follow the backup and transfer instructions found at https://www.ubbcentral.com/support/docs/ubbclassic/UBB6_backup_transfer.html ?

no. i didn't know such thing existed. i've never used or moved a ubb before. this is the first time i have to deal with it. i just got tar balls of the website from the previous host. and i think they are no longer in business.

how do solve this? what information do i need to troubleshoot it?

You can still restore from the tar balls. To properly move your UBB with the above instructions, you need a full installation zip of the version that you are currently running.

The basic method to restore is:
- Backup old
- Install new instance of UBB on new server
- restore files except vars_config.cgi
- Run rebuilds

Worst case, you could always fill out a support ticket and get assistance from Infopop Support.

does this mean that we'd have to BUY a new installation zip?! just because they moved to a new server?!?

If you don't have a copy of the full installation zip and if your subscription to the members area lapsed you will have to renew the subscription.

ok... i'll interpret that as a yes.
since the people i'm doing this for never actually had a copy - it was host's - and i'm not really sure what the member area is.....

In order to legally operate the UBB you need a license, otherwise you're violating copyright issues as well as not being entitled to support... They should contact the place where they got the install from originally and require the license information to at least cover their butt...
